ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
Writer/Artist: Cartoonist.
What is your message?
The message changes.
Your biography in four lines.
I like writing.
I like drawing.
I like doing them both at the same time.
Comics.
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
How an idea is born is a mystery.
Life is inspiration.
What role does technology play in your creative process?
I use pencils, pens and brushes to make my comics.
I use computers to scan and print them.
What is art?
"...quite useless."
When do you get your best ideas?
Anytime.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
I like it, or I don't.
Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created?
Writing.
Drawing.
Music.
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
When: Around ten years ago? I'm not sure.
How: I said "I'm an artist".
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities?
They are people.
Do you consider yourself postmodern?
I haven't considered that.
How should a work of art be evaluated?
On a personal basis, and/or as part of a wider basis.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday?
It happens naturally.
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
I admire many many artists.
I have no idea how they influence my work.
What do you think about public funding for the arts?
Very good. Keep it up. Do more.
Is art necessary?
No.
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold?
I imagine it would, so I never sell originals.
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought?
I bought a painting recently. I didn't buy the artist.
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is?
You make up the next step.
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased?
I do not feel anything about that.
What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career?
Very little. One chap has helped me get work on sale in the big smoke.
What types of jobs do you usually do?
Comics.
Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy?
I enjoy collecting ideas, coming up with plot lines, writing dialogue, drawing layouts for pages, and collating stories to make up an issue.
Do you personally collect any items?
Yes.

What advice would you give to those just beginning?
Get going.

WRITING
What did you first read? How did you begin to write? Who were the first to read what you wrote?
First read: Mr. Men books. The Dandy.
I began writing at school.
My teacher was first to read what I wrote.
What is your creative process like? What happens before sitting down to write?
I collect ideas as I go through life.
I concentrate on specific pieces I am writing and consider what I will have therein. Then I write.
What type of reading inspires you to write?
Everything inspires me on some level.
What do you think are the basic ingredients of a story?
Plot, dialogue and page layout interest me.
What voice do you find most to your liking: first person or third person?
First person.
What well known writers do you admire most?
Too many to mention.
What is required for a character to be believable? How do you create yours?
On the page good dialogue and body language is required.
In my head I need to know their motivation and personality.
Are you equally good at telling stories orally?
Yes.
Deep down inside, who do you write for?
Me.
Is writing a form of personal therapy? Are internal conflicts a creative force?
Maybe.
They can be.
Does reader feed-back help you?
Yes.
Do you participate in competitions? Have you received any awards?
No and no.
Do you share rough drafts of your writings with someone whose opinion you trust?
I have done.
Do you believe you have already found "your voice" or is that something one is always searching for?
Both.
What discipline do you impose on yourself regarding schedules, goals, etc.?
Differs from project to project.
What do you surround yourself with in your work area in order to help your concentrate?
Coffee and sweets.
Do you write on a computer? Do you print frequently? Do you correct on paper? What is your process?
When I write just words, I either write with a pen or type as I go.

When I do comics, I make rough layouts, which involves writing and drawing as I go.

What has been your experience with publishers?
I like reading some of what they publish.
What are you working on now?
Dump
What do you recommend I do with all those things I wrote years ago but have never been able to bring myself to show anyone?
Keep them until you decide what to do with them.
Or throw them away.

JOURNALISM
What is your specialty? What subjects do you deal with?
Comics. Music.
In which media do you presently work or have you worked?
Print. Radio.
What is "news"?
What is written in the papers, TV, online, etc.
To you, what is objectivity?
Impossible.
An ideal.
What can you teach us about the art of the interview?
Be interested. Know something about who you're interviewing. Be clear in your head about what you're trying to get from the interviewee.
What is the book you would like to write?
I won't give it away before I've written it.
