Interview with:Baran Akkoyunlu [funkybudha]
PHOTOGRAPHY
 | Do you have an online gallery where one can view your photos? |
 | For how long have you done photography? How did you begin? I've discovered a Nikon N90 SLR camera in my parents house in 2003. Taking photos with it was an amazing experience. The colors, the film grain, endless possibilities of 50mm lens just amazed me. I knew that photography would always be a part of me. Since 2 years it became my profession. |
 | What is your favourite type of photography? At first it was about anything human. The expression, lifestyles and details. The mood, deep feelings and thoughts of individuals in and around my life. Now my main interest is glamour & fashion |
 | What do you try to express through your photography? On my personal works, I want to showcase people. Their world, their colors, moods, daily details... They don't have to be in my life but my photos should deliver their emotions through my eyes. |
 | What type of preparation do you do before undertaking the photo session? It's really important for me to understand the person in front of me. His/her mimics, expressions, lifestyle is what I need to catch and express.
For paid professional work all I need iis the exact brief. I need to know what I shall deliver in order to see what input I can create. |
 | Do you normally photograph with a purpose already in mind, or do you let yourself go with the flow? It's always good to plan things out first, to visualise beforehand. That is if you want to have a desired response in the first place. Though At the end of each session its always good to have a free-session where you go with the flow together with the model of course |
 | Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sigma, Olympus, Sony, Pentax...which do you place your bets on and why? 5d Mark II is a great camera for me. Reliable full frame which works flawless with many lenses producing most efficient outcomes. For cmercial use though there is Pentax and Hasselblad. Im still Hassesl even with its price tag in consideration. |
 | Describe your current equipment: cameras, lenses, computers, accessories... Canon 5d Merk II + 17-40 f4 + 50mm f1.4 + 85mm f1.8 + 100mm macro + I'm still a PC [for now] |
 | What software and plug-ins do you use to retouch and manage your photos? Ps Cs5 + Nik software + Adobe Lightroom |
 | What measures do you take to protect your work against Internet piracy? For the web I use 72dpi and 400x600 format and nothing else. I upload my photos on flickr where you can only take a screenshot to steal my work. My commercial shoots are yet to be published on my own webpage that is still unferconstruction. |
 | Are technology and digital retouching reducing the gap between professionals and amateurs? Photography is not just taking a photo and retouching it. You have to earn it. You have to have a vision, a style to distinguish within so many talented people. So no, anyone worrying about a gap closing should check him/herself out to see wether he/she is missing on something or not. |
 | Do you consider yourself more technical or more artistic? Nieghter.. But I'm surely not a control freak on technical aspects - hence I'm not working in advertising anymore : )) |
 | How does one develop the instinct of knowing when to press the shutter release button? Keep shooting and shooting and shooting... Once you feel you're always taking the same shots then you'll eventually discover how to differ. Simple as that. |
 | When should one use film, and when should one use digital? I would always shoot film if I could! There's no question about it! But the deadlines and the cost issues today requires digital fir almost every commercial work. Unless you have a name to buy time : )) |
 | Does photography have the recognition that it should have in contemporary art museums? Oh yes. And it's recognition is growing rapidly these days. |
 | Which websites for photographers do you frequently visit? For some trends: Deviantart and Flickr. It's simple, sincere and widely used.
For some insights: Fashionphotography blog.
For real good inspiration: Bentrovato, XOXO the mag, ID, Antz
For random ispiration and all I would suggest twitter accounts of magazines and photographers you come accross anywhere.. The journey mever ends : )) |
