Interview with:gary smith [garygarry]
MULTIMEDIA
What is your specialty in multimedia? mainly enabling software and apps but I also keep an eye on hardware developments, especially connected TVs which i believe will change the viewer experience profoundly over the next 2-5 years
| Do you have a website or blog where we can see something of your work? http://about.me/garygarry/bio

What has been your career path? How have you arrived to the point where you are? What did you do before? I was a drummer for quite a while, then I was offered a job at a music magazine and from there, simply followed my nose
What types of clients do you have? How do they find you? I mainly work for in-house publications like MIPTV News, MIPCOM News and Sportel News, but I also moderate panels at various events (Amsterdam Dance Event and Buma Rotterdam Events), copywrite for event organisers, translate and also write speeches for executive presentations
How did your interest in multimedia technology begin? I've always found technology thrilling
Please provide a brief description of the hardware and software you currently use most. Mac Intel Dual Core/iPhone 4S/iPad 2 and consequently I use a lot of apps like instagram, shazam, dropbox, readdle
What parts of your work are the ones you enjoy most and least? meeting and talking to exceptional and often highly intelligent people is what I like most, and being pressured to nice-up stories to please advertisers is what I dislike most, although given magazine's dependence on selling ads, it is inevitable
Technology and art - a collison of the left and right brain? possibly
Do you usually keep an eye on the work of your competition and analyze how they have done things? I am not competitive, except with myself
How do you learn new techniques? Manuals? Tutorials? Trial and error? usualy trial and error...manuals are often spectacularly boring, and if a device is well designed and intuitive one should be able to find out much of what it does fairly quickly and easily
What new technologies are you experimenting with now? am fascinated by the future of GPS-based games and applications. Also very much involved with how the connected home will affect our lives
What technology or phenomenon do you believe will revolutionize the sector in the next few years? connected or smart TVs for media..streaming services 2.0 for music
Does it irk you when something new makes what you've already learned obsolete? not at all...that's life
You spend many hours in front of screens and in dark rooms. How do you compensate for that on a personal level? I cycle every day for at least 90 minutes, longer when possible, I also hike and spend as much time as possible amongst nature
If you have to hire an assistant, what qualifications and qualities do you look for when making your choice? most importantly that they should be a reasonable person with a healthy curiosity
What types of professionals are you used to collaborating with, sharing experiences with, or forming a team with? other writers, designers, artists, sporty people
What professional publications or portals do you follow regularly? TechCrunch TechMeme, Verge, Daily Beast, The Guardian, The Independent, Autosport, Eurosport
What advice would you give those who want to break into this profession? you will go as far as you are curious...always be open and willing to learn and don't confuse yourself with any job...the only thing that matters is the end result, and if you have to swallow some pride to get the desired result, so be it
