BLOGGING
What is your blog address? What subjects do you deal with?
Http://geek-woman.com/wordpress Geek Woman Speaks is a video games and technology blog.
What was it that made you create your blog? On what date did you start it?
I wrote for several women's video game websites, and men's too. Eventually I needed my own website because I always wrote more content than my editors could keep up with. I began reviewing video games in 04. But I've been a gamer since 1979. Which gives me a long view from experience. There aren't many female game writers out there like me. When I started there were only a handfull of female game jounalists. Six years is forever in internet time. There are many more young women doing tech blogs.
What blogging system have you adopted and why?
I used Wordpress. It's easy.
How many visits a day do you get? What type of comments do you receive?
Around 5,000 a day. I have comments closed I don't want to spend all my time deleting porn links.
How has 'having a blog' contributed to your life?
I've had several social network blogs that did nothing for me. I got nothing from LJ, but met more people with myspace. My website - I don't call it a blog because it is one way, no comments it's publishing. I consider myself a blogger though. A weird distinction. I enjoy writing about video games because I have played so many, I can't help comparing them. The benefit is I have occasionally gotten some cool things to test. Bottom line though is it has been in the red consistently.
Have you created relationships with other bloggers or readers of your blog?
I do have professional contacts because of website, since it's video games journalism.
How often do you post? Does regular posting of your blog require a lot of effort on your part?
I try to post every day but realistcally it's several times a week. The ammount of stuff I have to play is pretty time consuming. I like to give each one plenty of attention so that readers can get a feeling for what it is without buying it.
Does blogging bring in income for you? Can one make a living from posting?
Nope. And no. I heard somewhere "Writing is the only profession where people won't laugh at you for making no money." Yeah I'm not laughing either. Got a product? Send it to me and I'll take a look at it.
How do you promote your blog?
I don't do enough to promote my website.
How would you define your readers? Have you got a faithful audience?
Yes I do have a faithful group of readers. They seem to follow my work over the years where ever I put it out there. My numbers have been going up steadily since it started.
Have you ever received gifts for blogging about your opinion of products or services? What do you think of bloggers who do that?
Gifts would be nice. No I haven't gotten any. Shwag would be nice too. Press Accounts aren't really gifts. It's access given for the purposes of providing a review. It isn't tangible. Some games suck, and that's no gift.
How do you see your blog evolving in the future?
In September I am planning a relaunch since it has been 5 years. I will be more Apple centric. Many of my readers are Mac users. I'm putting in new art and working up other ideas.
