Interview with:

Gion Stump [gionstump]

MUSIC
What do you do? What is your musical specialty?
I do whatever I feel like doing. My music is something between Pop/Rock and ArtRock with international influences.
Do you work alone or in a group? If in a group, who are the others you work with?
I write the songs and the lyrics and show them to my band, the "Lighthouse Project". If they like the new stuff, we work out the details. I'm always surprised how much better the song gets when playing it with the Lighthouse Project! I have the pleasure to work with great musicians. I've known them all for a long time. They're not only good musicians, but also amazing persons. Claudio Weder (Piano) Orlando De Toffol (Guitar, Bass) Reto Stump (Drums)

How did you begin making music? Who introduced you?
Thanks to my parents, I listened a lot to all sorts of music, but especially classical music. When I was 13 I was introduced to the music of Peter Gabriel by my brother. He opened my doors to rock music. I got to know a lot of great artists: Chris de Burgh, Billy Joel, Nick Cave, ...
What was your musical education?
I took violine, percussion, piano and vocal lessons for many years.
What is your creative process?
I write when I feel like writing. I can't write when being forced to do it. I guess for me the creative process is a natural thing. When I have a few weeks off I always want to write as much as possible - but I can't... It's like I would have to "refuel" my mind again firstly.
When do you have your most lucid moments, in the morning or night?
I don't know...
Have you ever awoken with a melody created from your dreams?
Yes! It was a great melody, but I had nothing to record it or to write it down... and of course I forgot it again in the morning... Since this moment I always have my mobile next to my bed so I could record a melody
How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes?
When I'm happy with it...
How do you feel right before going out on stage?
Tired! I always get tired before a concert. Usually just 1 or 2 minutes before going on stage I start feeling great and then I'm looking forward to singing for the audience. I don't really get nervous anymore, there is only a feeling of happiness and excitement.
Which musicians or groups have been inspiring to your career?
Peter Gabriel Nick Cave Chris de Burgh Billy Joel David Bowie Kieran Goss Charlie Winston Pink Floyd
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the business?
Never be afraid to fail! Dream Big and Never say Never!
