Interview with:

David Grimstone [grimstone]

WRITING
What did you first read? How did you begin to write? Who were the first to read what you wrote?
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain by Steve Jackson & Ian Livingstone, and Eric by Terry Pratchett. I started writing short stories aged 10 years old, and was fortunate enough to win three prizes at the Dover District Festival of Literature. My mum was the first person to read my work.
What is your favorite genre? Can you provide a link to a site where we can read some of your work or learn something about it?
Children's books, SF and fantasy, comedy. My official site is at http://www.davidgrimstone.co.uk and I have a Wikipedia page searchable under 'David Lee Stone'.
What is your creative process like? What happens before sitting down to write?
Varies for each book: some are meticulously planned out, while others are written in one long, creative burst!
What type of reading inspires you to write?
See the above answer for genres.
What do you think are the basic ingredients of a story?
Plot first, characters second - in some cases. Characters first, plot second - in others. :-) Narrative, narrative, narrative!
What voice do you find most to your liking: first person or third person?
I'm writing books in first at the moment, but before that always in third. I prefer third.
What well known writers do you admire most?
Terry Pratchett, Michael Marshall, Rob Grant, Doug Naylor and Douglas Adams. I like Patrick Rothfus a lot at the moment.
