Hair By Drew [hairbydrew]

STYLING
What is your specialty as a stylist? fashion, salon, image, objects...?
Party hair! You should look glamorous no matter what the occasion.
Can you provide a link to a site where we can see something of your work or of where you work.
www.hairbydrew.com
In what style or trend do you classify yourself?
I love hair that looks natural.
How did you begin to develop your talent? Have you possesed it since you were a child?
I always loved the way I felt after a haircut and I thought I want to be the one who makes people feel that way too. So by the time I was 13 I was trying to get into beauty school.
What importance has professional training had on your career?
In beauty school you learn things to pass your state boards, Being an assistant to professionals, you learn how to work with real situations. I can't think of a better way to learn than to be side by side with someone who is a specialist that will challenge you to learn before giving you the answers.
What people or experiences have taught you the most and helped you to arrive where you are?
The salon I started at had very strict rules. Ones that kept you busy and learning, not sitting around. At the time I was 17 and it seemed like a drag but now I thank them for what I have learned and I structure my own business around those same guidelines. We were taught how to be appropriate to clients. That is the strongest lesson I learned, how to speak to people and really listen. That is the only way a client will get what they want. Also cleanliness IS key! No mess on stations no mess on the floor, etc. and be organized! Your clients notice everything.
What is your concept of beauty? Why does it change so much from one culture to another, or from one era to another?
Beauty comes from confidence.
Do you need to love what you do, or does professionalism suffice?
I am lucky that I love what I do. There was a brief time where I was building my business that I was not working that much and I felt like I was going through withdrawl. I just wanted to do some hair! So, No you don't NEED to love what you do, but it is a life changing difference. If you spend your days miserable at work it will carry over to the rest of your life and effect everything you do.
What do you do when a client requests something that you believe is not suitable for him/her?
You really need to dissect what the client is asking for. Alot of the times what they want is not what they are asking for. It is all about the consultation and being professional.
Besides advising clients, do you also educate them?
Some want to be educated, others want to just be pampered. Sometimes too much information overwhelms the client.
Your definition of "glamour"?
Confidence with sparkle.
Please name three well-known personalities whose look you admire, and three who need to urgently change their image.
I love Reese Witherspoon and Drew Barrymore, they arn't afraid of changing their style.
Make a prediction: how long will the fashion of piercing and tattoos last?
Forever.
