Interview with:Dior Galarza [helloimfancy]
STYLING
What is your specialty as a stylist? fashion, salon, image, objects...? I 'm well known for my unique pieces and funky accessories, suiting the client in looks that fit best for his/her is key. Being true to who they are just adding a little edge to it.
Can you provide a link to a site where we can see something of your work or of where you work. You can check me out on http://www.stylecaster.com/people/44923/dior-galarza this is my personal style cast my own website is on the way
In what style or trend do you classify yourself? lol well I sort of jump around in different decades and time periods depending on my mood but I will have to say I'm most comfortable in pretty punk out of the 80s
What are your clients like? The ages pretty much rage and it's usually someone who is trying to create a new look for themselves who needs a little help
How did you begin to develop your talent? Have you possesed it since you were a child? I have to say I have been stylish since I was a child thanks to my dad he always kept me in outfits from head to toe. My mother on the other hand tells me I always wanted to wear the girly dresses and hated getting dirty. So I guess it was installed in me lol.
What importance has professional training had on your career? I am currently attending F.I.T just the overall knowledge of fashion is always useful when creating these looks. However the best training I must say is working at Betsey Johnson for 2 years you have to realize not everyone will like your specific look but you have to find what is comfortable and different for the client.
When did you first realize you could make a living this way? I knew I wanted to be in the fashion buisness. I just couldn't figure out my place and watching the careers of Patricia Fields Racheal Zoe I realized styling would be the best route for me. I see the looks from hair to accessories to makeup every makes it. I enjoy playing with all those details
What people or experiences have taught you the most and helped you to arrive where you are? I most likely would say Betsey Johnson paved the way to where I am now. Her ability to think outside the box layer mixed patterns colors fabrics and make it all come together. Being around that type of enviroment pushed me to work harder at what I do.
What is your concept of beauty? Why does it change so much from one culture to another, or from one era to another? It's what makes you feel beautiful as an individual. Whatever weight makeup hairstyle makes you look feel good. Reguardless of what any society or culture says. Don't let media determine your beauty. We all beautiful in our own ways.
Do you need to love what you do, or does professionalism suffice? A wise friend told me when you get paid for doing what you love you found your passion but until then it's just a hobby. I say pursue what you will do forever for free whatever that thing is add the buisness factor to it and what it will take to make that hobby into a career.
What do you do when a client requests something that you believe is not suitable for him/her? I try to come up with an inbetween look thats a little them and a little me. Sometimes they have specific things in mind but it is my job to make it all come together.
Besides advising clients, do you also educate them? I've had plenty of fashion history moments with my clients especially if I'm pulling a look from a certain collection or decade or designer. I usually inform them on my inspiration behind it.
Isn't there a cult of vanity in premeditated publicity and fashion poses? Yes, I believe in the industry you just have to be ready for camera time. Practice makes perfect I'm still just warming up to red carpet events but eventually it becomes second nature.
Your definition of "glamour"? glamour to me is adding glitz some sparkle to your everyday look. You don't have to be on a red carpet to be glamourous.
Please name three well-known personalities whose look you admire, and three who need to urgently change their image. I admire Kanye West Lady Gaga Raquel Reed I believe all three styles are all very insprirational to me. Bobby Valentino Paris Hilton Avril lavigne I have a few looks for them that might be a better direction.
Being surrounded by a different style can cause a person to feel different. Can such a feeling transform a person? I don't believe it will completely transform a person but maybe give them a different perspective on things that inspire their style and way of thinking.
What trends do you see gaining momentum? I've been seeing very Sci-Fi Star Trek which I'm loving Rick Owens Alexander Mcqueen of course Gareth Pugh Miu Miu even Vivienne Westwood has some pieces that are a little out of this world.
Make a prediction: how long will the fashion of piercing and tattoos last? I believe there will always be a designer or creator who sees the art in them it can be around for a long time. So far I don't see it going no where.
What magazines or websites do you follow to keep up to date? What other types of cultural inputs serve as sources of inspiration for you? I think with all my magazine purchases I keep buisness up a percentage ELLE VOGUE NYLON are my top choices I follow WWD online as well as some fashion blogs such as WilliamYan.com
I would like to be more discerning when I buy clothes or furniture. What do you recommend I do to acquire this ability? I would do the online research prior to purchase sometimes we find better bargains never hesitate to ask sales associates opinions. Don't stop at the first store walk around window shop then narrow it down.
