WRITING
 | What did you first read? How did you begin to write? Who were the first to read what you wrote? Possibly tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. As an engineering student, most of my classes required written lab reports, all with a beginning, a middle and an end |
 | What is your favorite genre? Can you provide a link to a site where we can read some of your work or learn something about it? I truely enjoy writing about my life I have written, published and pedaled two books, Nubbin Ridge and The Chinaberry Tree and be found and excerpts accessed at googlebooks.com. I also write for the weekly, The News Commerical, Collins, MS and the daily Hattiesburg American. |
 | What is your creative process like? What happens before sitting down to write? The media gives me all the juices I need for writing my oppinion columnsand my veiws is always 180 degrees in opposition.
The human interest Stuff, I truly enjoy and these pieces come from an idea our a one liner I have kept stored away. |
 | What type of reading inspires you to write? All of Steinbeck's works, Weldy and Faulkner, of course I have never really understood Weldy and Faulkner. I also enjoy Wila Cather |
 | What do you think are the basic ingredients of a story? This is a tough one. But the story must have a beginning a peak and an end which reflects on the beginning. One will find compassionate honesty in all of my writings. Also I kinda like Hemmingway when it comes to conservation of words while getting maximum meanings |
 | What voice do you find most to your liking: first person or third person? I usually write in first-person; I find it much easier to formulate my ideas |
 | What well known writers do you admire most? John Steinbeck, Eudora Weldy and Larry McMuartyWilla Cather |
 | What is required for a character to be believable? How do you create yours? My characters usually come from those I know; to know the character you must know the environment in which the character has lived day-to-day, know his occupation, his needs and desires. |
 | Are you equally good at telling stories orally? No, not really |
 | Deep down inside, who do you write for? I write from myself. It is kinda like cleansing of the soul. I also feel good when people tell me they enjoy my work |
 | Is writing a form of personal therapy? Are internal conflicts a creative force? In my case yes; I get immense enjoyment through writing; maybe internal conflicts are a creative forces of writing but I'm not too sure about that one. |
 | Does reader feed-back help you? Yes I enjoy reading all the correspondance I get from my readers and I always respond. And a few book orders trickle in. |
 | Do you participate in competitions? Have you received any awards? I have entered two, very apparent, commerical competitions and I have won zero times. |
 | Do you share rough drafts of your writings with someone whose opinion you trust? Yes, with my wife |
 | Do you believe you have already found "your voice" or is that something one is always searching for? definitly Yes |
 | What discipline do you impose on yourself regarding schedules, goals, etc.? Almost none; Maybe thats why I am still a struggling writer |
 | What do you surround yourself with in your work area in order to help your concentrate? A cluttered office with two pcs, a file cabinet and two printers |
 | Do you write on a computer? Do you print frequently? Do you correct on paper? What is your process? I write using the PC and Word. I only print when I think I have the column publish ready and I will pick up errors not detected from screen reading. I edit, edit and edit, consequently when it is published the article squeaky tight. I wish I had learned to edit my material before writing Nubbin and Chinaberry. |
 | What sites do you frequent on-line to share experiences or information? I've tried a few sites including Writers Digest but they do not have too much to offer. |
 | What has been your experience with publishers? I have had no exsperience with publishers. |
 | What are you working on now? Aarticles for newspapers and and two short stories |
 | What do you recommend I do with all those things I wrote years ago but have never been able to bring myself to show anyone? Publish them!! |
