What is your definition of health, and of a healthy life?
As said earlier www.Indianshealth.com has been designed with a vision to provide a concise and practical advice on the triangle of diet, health and fitness for Indians living not just in India but also abroad. The website aims to provide every individual with a new insight into how to lead a healthy and better life as well as provide easy solutions that meet their expectations with respect to live long, hail and hardy.
What are some basic rules for those who want to live to be 100.
Eat a balanced diet that suits you well. Sleep well for minimum of 7 hours daily. Start off at an early age with a fitness plan. Go for heavy exercises (bench press) in early stages and lighter exercise (yoga) in later stages of life. Quit smoking. Avoid alcohol or restrict it to 2 glasses of Red wine for a healthy heart. Drink lots of water. Cultivate good relationships as a active social life goes a long way in promoting healthy lifestyle Have a active sex life. Laugh often and loudly as a exercise therapy Make it point get a daily dose of fresh air and sunlight. Eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Read inspirational books/stories that make you happy. Avoid digestive and bowl problems as stomach is the source of many diseases. Eat slowly and chew the food. Avoid junk food as much as possible. Curtail oily, fat rich food intake as you grow old. Reduce workload once you cross age of 50. Go for regular health check up after age of 45. Try to be a happy and avoid stress. Cut down on salt to avoid blood pressure. Reduce sugar intake to cut diabetes risk. Always remember to take a break from routine and go out on a holiday. Avoid stressful situation as much as possible.
Happiness and health: how much do they have in common, and how much myth is there in their relationship?
If one is happy and one is healthy. Its said 'Its all in the mind'. Its not a myth but a reality. If one man believes that he can overcome a disease, instantly he will be happy and will respond positively to treatment no matter how long it takes. This will definitely have a positive impact on a person's personal health. With that believe several people suffering from problems ranging from as worse as concer have been seen as overcoming the deadly disease.
Conventional medicine and alternative medicine: what is real and what is superstition?
It can be said that while conventional medicine hits the nail directly on a particular point, alternative medicine tries to find a other way to hit a particular point. Also reportedly conventional medicine is fast healer and alternative medicine is a slow healer. Also sometimes alternative medicine is also called a superstition, such as fish medicine for asthma given by Bethany family of Hyderabad, India is sometimes called a superstitious believe. Though modern medicine claims that asthma cant be cured completely, the Bethany family claims they can cure asthma in people completely. Though people who have completed the 4 year course of the 'fish medicine' say they have been cured, scientific experiments have not been able to pin point the exact reason as to how is that possible. Also problems like gout, arthritis cant be cured completely through conventional medicine as it considers them as degenerative disease and can only be helpful in reducing the pain pain associated to a certain extent; however practicing Yoga therapy under supervision of yoga experts has been seen as curing the problems completely in patients.
Can the mind cause or cure illness? What evidence do you have on the matter?
Its said 'A positive mind is have the battle won' and 'A negative mind is half the battle lost'. So the status of mind as a cause or cure for illness holds great significance. If a person believes in mind that he/she will overcome a particular problem, then the chances of the patients responding positively top treatment increase. Its has been seen in cancer patients or paralytic patients that those who believed that they could overcome their problems have been more than successful in overcoming their problems despite going through treatment procedures that are sometimes considered too painful to near. So its aptly said 'Its all in the mind'.
Do you recommend Vitamins and nutritional supplements? Do you believe their benefits have been proven?
Giving vitamins and nutritional supplements to patients depends on case to case basis. Though their effectiveness is beyond doubt in some cases and still under observation in some others, vitamins and nutritional supplements should be prescribed depending upon the status of a person's health which indicates his/her's ability to respond positively to vitamins and nutritional supplements.
Every day there is a new product to stop aging. Is it solace that we are really buying?
People like to experiment with a new product every time. As such companies launch a new product almost on daily basis, giving the consumer an option to the regular product they use. Companies probe the consumers to use a different product with a flashy new advertisement supported by a known face; or by advertising on the usefulness of a particular ingredient in a particular product which though already existed. For example in India, Colgate had a strangle hold on toothpaste business in 1960s. Though every toothpaste includes clove oil, Promise toothpaste when launched specifically focused on the existance of clove oil in its toothpaste, and managed to make a huge dent in the business of Colgate. Even though there was nothing new in it, people found solace that they were buying a new product in place of existing one.
Obesity, insomnia, and depression, are epidemic. What does that say about our way of life? What must be changed at the social level?
Yes, obesity, insomnia, and depression are an epidemic. The new age of technology has created a world, where everything is computerized or automated, which means a person has to do little or no effort to get the job done. As such a sedentary lifestyle of a person has become the norm in the new age of technology. With a person becoming inactive problems like obesity, insomnia, and depression are bound to set in. To get rid of these problems a person must have a highly active social life that calls for not just physical but also mental interaction between two or more people. Also doing as many things on their own despite automated option being available can be helpful in getting rid of problems like obesity, insomnia, and depression.
What is your opinion on the use of medical marijuana for terminal illnesses.
Medical marijuana is the use of cannabis (including the constituents of cannabis: THC and other cannabinoids) also called 'pot' as a physician-recommended form of medicine or herbal therapy. Although the extent of the medicinal value of cannabis has been disputed, it reportedly does have several beneficial effects in treatment of nausea and vomiting, stimulating hunger in chemotherapy and AIDS patients, lowering intraocular eye pressure (glaucoma), as well as a general analgesic effects (pain reliever). As such using medical marijuana to relieve the pain of a person suffering from terminal illnesses can be approved as a method. However a major criticism of Medical marijuana/cannabis as medicine is the opposition to smoking as a method of consumption. Also excess use of medical marijuana as a form of addiction has also been detected. As such use of medical marijuana should be restricted and regulated under strict laws.
The patient/doctor relationship is part of the success of treatment. What should it be like?
It depends on case to case and situation to situation basis. Most of the times it should remain entirely professional however sometimes giving the patient/doctor relationship a personal touch in the form of friendship goes a long way in treating the patients. However the level of friendship should be decided by the medical practitioner in such a way that it does not harm the treatment of the patient or results in deviation from their 'Hippocratic Oath'.
Is it reasonable to treat a patient whose condition is hopeless, only for medical experimentation?
No, absolutely not as it may be considered that the medical practitioners are treating the patient whose condition is hopeless as a guinea pig. However if a treatment has been tested before with positive results, medical experimentation can be allowed to carried out depending upon chances of favorable response in each case, as its the job of a medical practitioner to try and save lives using every possible method under their ''Hippocratic Oath' that they take while becoming a full fledged medical practitioner.
How do patient beliefs or superstitions effect recovery?
It depends on the mental state of a person. Its said a disease is half cured if a person believes that practicing a particular procedure with cure him/her. If a person believes in mind that by practicing a superstition he/she may be cured, despite no conclusive prove that the particular superstition is effective in dealing with a disease or symptom; the person may start thinking him/herself as cured if someone tells them that practicing a superstition was beneficial for them. For example, fish medicine given by the Bethany family of Hyderabad, India to asthma patients over a period of 4 yrs is said to cure people of asthma, but scientific research has not found any conclusive proof to support that claim.
What is the best way to give bad news to a patient?
It depends on the personal discretion of the person who is entrusted to convey the bad news to the patient. Sometimes the person may be direct/blunt to such an extent that the patient may feel that the person was rude. Sometimes it may happen that person may break the news with a hug, or a smile and even try to brake the bad news in such a humorous way that the patient does feel that offended. eg in Hindi film Munnabha MBBS (2003), the lead protagonist hugs and shares the grievances of every person (even a terminally ill cancer patient) in such a way that they are happy even in the face of death.
Is the best preventive medicine teaching someone how to live?
Yes, teaching a person how to live a proactive and natural life is perhaps the best medicine. However this depends upon how well a person is able to cope with the ensuing situations of the life.
What are the most frequent errors of slimming diets.
The most frequent errors of slimming diets is the assumption that when one diet plan works for one person; it should work for another person. However the fact is as every person is different and their requirements are different, so slimming diets for every person has to be different depending upon their lifestyle, work schedule, body metabolism and other related factors. However a customized slimming diet must be prepared as per the instruction of a dietician or nutritionist. Not just that the execution of the diet should be under the watchful eyes of a dietician or nutritionist.
Are too many unnecessary tests and x-rays performed in hospitals?
It depends on the requirement to determine and diagnose a correct disease. Sometimes it may happen that a symptom may be detected in one particular test but not in another, so conducting extra test and x-rays depends upon necessity to detect and diagnose the correct problem. However some hospitals and test centers do sometimes connive to milk a patient of his/her money. Then it may be termed as medical malpractice.
What new technologies have the most potential to save lives in the near future?
As per the current trend, steam cell research based technologies that can be used to cure cancer and even help a immobile person find movement in body parts can be helpful. Also use of microchips that help a deaf, mute, blind, amputee, and paralytic person regain effectiveness in the respective parts of the body can be helpful.
If someone consults you, what is your recommendation regarding cosmetic surgery and implants?
My recomendation to a person for cosmetic surgery and implants would depend on the situation on hand. If the person is working in a environment where looks are everything and the better a person looks, the more work he/she gets (eg. modeling/acting) then I would recommend the person to go for plastic surgery and implants but that too only when its absolutely important under the supervision of a expert facial surgeries. However cosmetic surgery and implants in cases that are related to health, fitness need to be dealt with a different perspective. For example, cosmetic surgery and implants to reduce bulging fat around stomach, remove birth marks, burn marks, unwanted facial scars/accident marks are very much advisable but should be done only after proper consultation with a expert surgeon.
What is your opinion on the regulation of health care practice.
Its really important to regulate health care practice, as unregulated health care practice can be disastrous for the society. It may be known that unregulated health care practice may lead to unregulated use/consumption of restricted drugs without prescription or may lead to unethical practices such as recommendation of surgical procedures that have huge risks involved.
How do you asses the potential or the risks of genetic engineering on nutrition and human health?
The effect of genetic engineering on nutrition and human health will be disastrous for any society and humanity on the whole. It may be known that several products developed using man made technologies have proved had an adverse effects for example, DDT got accumulated in fish and thin the shells of fish-eating birds like eagles and ospreys; and it turned out that CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) used in refrigerators and spray cans tend to float in upper atmosphere and have considerably thinned the ozone layer. It may happen that genetically engineered food products may be resistant to all types of disease that affect them, and this may push up food production; there is a distinct possibility that these food products may get affected with a entirely new type of disease, resistance for which may not have been included in that food product and if that happens then the entire cultivations over huge tracts of land may get destroyed as the disease becomes and epidemic. As indiscriminate use of genetic engineering may do a irrevocable damage to human life and society, so its really important to know the repercussions before enhancing the use of genetic engineering on nutrition and human health.
Do you believe legalizing the use of narcotics would increase or lessen the damage caused to public health?
Yes, legalizing use of narcotics will have a damning effect on the health of a person and will be detrimental towards society.
Of the thousands of beauty products on the market, what percentage has a significant effect?
I believe most of the beauty products available in the market are ineffective, most try to sell their products with glosssy advertising and only a few that too those beauty products that are exclusively made using natural ingredients are effective.
How many times have you guessed what was wrong with a patient only by looking at his/her face?
I am not an medical practitioner or a psychic to figure out what is wrong with a person. At best by looking at a person I can figure out that a person is tired or not. I am not a medical practitioner but I want to spread awareness about leading a healthy life with focus on three most important things that have an impact on a persons life, ie health, fitness and diet.
What areas of health or of medicine are you most interested in devoting yourself to in the next few years?
As said earlier the focus of www.Indiashealth.com is not on any thing specific or any particular line of medicinal treatment but on creating an awareness towards a holistic approach towards health, fitness and diet.
Would you change your profession for any another?
No
