Interview with:Iris Mishly [irismishly]
ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? My name is Iris Mishly and i am a polymer clay artist from Israel. After 15 years as a web designer, the coincidence led me to discover polymer clay in November 2004, I took 1 lesson, and i knew it was different from anything I'd ever done before. Fascinated with the magical world of color and form, transparency and opaque, I was instantly hooked. i am a mix-media artist, i like to combine materials together and my designes are mostly accessories and jewelry
What is your message? When i design a piece i am working in a spontaneous way, i never plan ahead, just follow my heart and mind.
| Your biography in four lines. Fashion Design studies in collage;
Artistic makeup studies;
Graphic designer (mostly for web design);
Polymer Clay artist; |
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? mostly my ideas are inside my head, i sometime walk around and look for fabric stores to see interesting patterns and color combinations and i browse around in the internet and bump into unique designs :)
What role does technology play in your creative process? The technology is not involved directly in my creative process, only as an inspiration - Internet and as a marketing medium.
What is art? art - for me, is something you do with your hands but it comes from inside you, heart, feeling, mind. something that involves a theraputic process and the final result of the creation has a special meaning to the artist.
When do you get your best ideas? in my dreams! sometimes i find myself waking up and remember i was dreaming about a unique design, a special color combination and i try to remember it but usually can't... :)
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not? i ask my family (sisters and husband) and friends for their objective opinion, I test it in the "field" when i try to sell few proto-types.
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist? It was about 3 years ago when people were asking to purchase my items, ordering custom order items and i was beginning to be recognized as a known polymer clay artist in magazines and online.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday? No, for me the handmade artistic process is relaxing and enjoyable, i love working in my studio and making successfull designs again and again. if i would have to invent myself all the time i wouldn't have enjoyed what i was doing and always worried about what is my next piece of art will be.
Is art necessary? yes! art is another important part of our lives, it's a way of entertainment just like any other way of enjoying your life wheather you are on the artist side or the viewer side.
| Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold? On the beginning of my artistic way it was hard for me to sell my art, but after you see the smiles on people face when they are so happy about the item they just bought from you, i started to enjoy it.
If i have a unique item i do not want to part from, i keep it! |
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought? The artist can not be bought because he is always on the move, changing, transforming, it's the art which is purchased.
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is? i just feel it. art itself takes me forward.
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased? they deserve their place of course, but the "living" designers should also get their chance to show their work.
What types of jobs do you usually do? I do special designs, custom orders and sometime when a design is good and successfull i do it over and over again but always in a slight different way and design. it's too boring to do things like in a production work.
Do you personally collect any items? no.
Which websites do you frequently visit?
What advice would you give to those just beginning? Follow your heart, don't give up your dream, if you want to be an artist and create - do it, we live only once!
