Interview with:JASON SCHOLTE [jace1020]
ART
 | What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? I am a freelance general artist, by artist I do anything that I can dabble in and clients would pay me to do. The styles I have the most experience in is comic, urban, commercial, and graphic art. As for mediums, I love anything digital and non-digital. |
 | What is your message? mine would be to keep doing everything under the sun to enlighten yourself and always keep trying something new. I try that with my art as much as possible. |
 | Your biography in four lines. I am an aspiring artist out of Chicago reinventing myself every chance I get.
fluent in both digital and non-digital art forms constantly mixing both for hopefully what people consider amazing artwork. |
 | Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it? |
 | How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? for sketching I let my mind go nuts. I just let my hand come up with basic shapes and go from there.
for clients I ask what they are looking for, go look at those things and brainstorm until I have at least a hundred or more things. from there I narrow it down to the strong ideas and flesh them out.
lots of my inspiration come from comic book, urban, and graphic design art. |
 | What role does technology play in your creative process? It depends on what I am doing. My 3d, photo manipulations, and coloring comics is done by computer of course, but i like real painting versus corel painter a little more because it keeps me on my toes when mistakes happen. My ideas to sketching is all away from the computer. I have been told to try the cintiq and use that for sketching. I might consider it. |
 | What is art? I think it is something that is made using creativity from any person to show to others and invoke any feeling from said person. I think it is a style, a creation, and an idea to show others and produce some sort of emotion from that person. |
 | When do you get your best ideas? At all sorts of times. I can be driving along and boom an idea hits. That is why I have a voice recorder and paper/pen with me at all times. |
 | How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not? One of the things I do is ask two people about the idea. I will ask one person that likes the subject matter and one who doesn't. If both like the idea then I will keep going with it.
I will give it a flexibility test. can it be shrunk, enlarged, different colors, be used in different ways, etc. |
 | Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created? The word have means past tense like I will never have the chance again. I don't believe I will have a chance until I am dead and none knows of the ideas. As for ideas I would like see come to fruition soon is my T-shirts, comic book ideas which represent more realistic stories, and the merchandising style I do for some hip hop artists I do work for. |
 | When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist? ever since the day I picked up a pencil and draw. I just love to do it and couldn't stop doing it. I remember when I would draw in math class back in 5th grade and the teacher would yell ,"what you going to do? draw all your life?!" |
 | Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities? I think our personalities are a result of us using a more creative method to things which allows us to use the creative side of our brain more. This is the side that also allows us to show our passion and express our opinions to things. I also think as artists and creators we are showing things all the time that is possibly sending a message or emotion to someone and some of us feel we should show our stance on many issues. |
 | Do you consider yourself postmodern? I would think mostly so even though I try to stick with the core mediums. |
 | How should a work of art be evaluated? Any way the viewer would like. I enjoy all critiques and see what the person is seeing themselves. |
 | Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday? I think it is up to the artist. I personally had to do it twice. I had two accidents that left me unable to draw for a certain amount of time and both time I felt I needed to do something different to express myself and bring me back to the level I want to be at. I love drawing right now even though I feel I am not at the level I want, but if I never get to that level doesn't mean I won't come up with the kind of art that expresses myself or conveys what a client wants. |
 | Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work? There are many artists in the comic and pop art communities. I do love the obvious Da Vinci, Angelo, Dali, and Van Gogh. |
 | What do you think about public funding for the arts? I agree with it because it assists in the growth of future artists such as my daughter. Art is the fundamental of many things in this world. |
 | Is art necessary? I believe it is since it is used an practically every aspect of every kind of industry on earth. |
 | Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold? It actually does because of the work it took to make that piece. It also represents you in your style and your interpretation of that piece. |
 | Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought? I think it is the work because even though a client might have asked for something, the artist still puts their style into it and is still expressing themselves. |
 | In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is? you make your own methods by trial and error. I write down each step I do so if anyone or myself wants to use the same effect or result then I have it available. |
 | How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased? I am bittersweet about it if I should use that word. I think it is sweet to have such artists who have lived before us works available to see, but it doesn't allow for more current artists to have work shown. I do find it irritating that works that I feel do not show skill (canvas painted canary yellow only at museum in Houston) are shown over a more skilled work. |
 | What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career? I would say if it wasn't for them even allowing my work then I wouldn't even be known by the individuals who do know my work. |
 | What types of jobs do you usually do? I have done almost every kind of job that has been offered to me. Only ones I have turned down are ones that break my moral standards. I won't do anything that glorify such things like hatred, racism, illegal things. |
 | Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy? I enjoy comic work and graphic work because it allows me freedom to create things. |
 | Do you personally collect any items? my work room is full of cartoon, comic and movie posters. |
 | Which websites do you frequently visit? |
 | What advice would you give to those just beginning? draw every day. I was told that by many artists this, but the first was comic book artist Angel Medina. (www.comicbookpros.com) I met him right after my first accident. He and my girlfriend were disagreeing about a signed comic he gave and if we broke up she should keep it. He asked what heppened to me and I told him. He next told me that no matter what always draw every day for at least a half an hour.
To this day even after my second accident I do it an hour a day.
other one is if I can do it then you can. |
