ILLUSTRATION
What is your specialty in illustration?
I specialize in decorative illustration for print, web and apparel applications.
What are your regular clients like? What do they expect from you?
My clients are relatively easy to work with, but they expect my work to be consistent with my style, and of course to make any deadlines and to not go over the budget.
Is there a web address where we can see some of your work?
Have you completed formal art studies, or are you self-taught?
I have a graphic design degree, but took extra classes in drawing and illustration since that was my primary area of interest.
How did you get your first full assignment? What did it involve?
I got my first full assignment on a freelance job bidding site. It was right after I graduated and one of the first places I looked for work. The assignment was for a logo design in a Rococo style.
What past or present day illustrators do you admire most?
Favorite illustrators of the past include Norman Rockwell, Alphonse Mucha and Alberto Vargas. Favorite illustrators of the present include Angry Blue, Stephanie Law, Catalina Estrada, C&C Ench, Jeff Wood of Drowning Creek, Marc Burchardt and way too many more to mention!
How similar are your current drawings to those you did as a child?
Well, you can tell I still love to draw girls, that's for sure!
What was your favorite comic book as a child?
I used to love those cheesy 70's romance comic books!
Do you have a particular style, or does it vary a lot?
My style is what you might call "decorative-stylized-realism". I like mixing all 3 together. I admire an all realistic work of art, but I get very bored if I'm trying to do straight realism myself. I have to add my own stylized twist to things.
What is hardest to draw?
Sometimes the human figure can be very daunting.
What type of music do you listen to while you work?
Alternative and "indie"...or just the sound of my space heater (I'm always cold)!
Do you have a favorite work of art?
Absolutely anything by Alphonse Mucha makes me drool.
What do you do when a client simply says "I don't like it"?
They've never said that, but hopefully for their sake they say it during the sketch phase. They might ask for a small adjustment, but that's it!
What new techniques have you been experimenting with lately?
Making my own distressed textures, scanning them in and then using them to "antique" my digital work.
What part of your work do you do on paper and what part digitally?
The thumbnail "idea-generation" phase and the sketch phase are done on paper and then the rest of the finished work is done digitally.
What research do you do for your illustrations?
Google first, then look around my studio for references I have collected and also my art books.
Do you have colleagues with whom you share techniques, tricks, ideas, etc.?
Yes, several :)
Do you have any specific goals as an illustrator?
My goals include selling prints of my work, creating some original paintings and drawings to sell at shows and possibly on my website, and to acquire more clients in the apparel and publishing industries who will call on me regularly for t-shirt and book cover art.
What illustration web sites do you frequent?
What are you working on now?
A logo for a non-profit, an apparel design to be embroidered on a jacket, and a book cover.
What advice do you have for someone who likes to draw and would like to make a living from it?
Go to school and get a degree if at all possible. You will learn a lot more in an art school than you will learn by yourself. Start sketching everyday and keep a journal of ideas. Get your name out there - get on every art site there is and show your work.
