Interview with:

Christopher Jodoin [jodoinc]

DESIGN
What is your specialty?
The basis for my business is creating an interesting and stunning atmosphere for events, with some dabbling in residential and commercial design. From sophisticated to slightly off beat, I try to infuse elements that guests will discover throughout the evening.
Where can we view your portfolio online?
www.christopherjdesign.com or you can email me for another version at style@christopherjdesign.com
What made you interested in design?
Well I guess like most people you seem to gravitate to what you enjoy doing, you develop your skills with some form of training, whether its mentoring, schooling, or experience and you just go for it. I’ve always been creative and enjoy it, so it shows in my work.
What has been your professional career path?
My career path started in retail merchandising and display, then moved into the entrepreneur field when I opened my own Gallery/boutique, from there I started in the event industry working for one of Vancouver’s top designers. Two years of working with her helped me realize that this is something that I truly enjoy doing and took a step out on my own in November of 2009.
What is your motivation? What makes you get up in the mornings?
Its fascinating and changes from day to day, sometimes it depends if its and event day, a concept day, a meeting a new client, if the sun is out. There is so much motivation for me I just couldn’t say one in particular.
How would you define your design style?
Contemporary, clean, sophisticated and slightly off beat
How do you promote and move your work?
Since I am still relatively new of being on my own as a freelance designer I am working right know on developing relationships with potential clients as I believe that is by far the best form of marketing. Finding out what companies may need, what they want, and if they are companies that I feel comfortable with, and they are comfortable enough with me.
In which new areas would you like to experiment?
I'd really like to dabble in home staging
Shapes, color, concept: where do you usually begin when conceiving a design?
Everything, all over its a world filled with inspiration
What are your sources for documentation and to generate ideas?
When I think of an idea or see something that I feel I can build an entire event around I will typically create a style sheet with images of elements that would go in a space and save that for a time were I think I can use. From there I would then turn it into a proposal for a client.
What is your favourite type of customer?
The big budget client who just lets you run with an idea! They might be a bit more cutting edge and want something that may push the envelope.
List some things you dislike seeing in design.
I dislike seeing the same thing regurgitated all the time.
Do you believe the newer generations are better at designing?
I dont think that they are better per say, I think they may have a fresh approach to design concepts.
With which type of client would you decline in working for?
One that I wouldnt think we would get along
Up to what point do your designs reflect your personality?
There would be elements of all my designs that reflect my personality
Can you see yourself in this field twenty years from now?
well have to see on that one!!!
