Interview with:Joshua Stewart [josh]
INTERNET
 | What was your first computer, and which is your current? A Compaq with a Intel Celeron 400 and an amazing 4Gb hard drive ;)
Now I'm happily using a custom built i5 750 rig with a 1Tb drive. |
 | Will bandwidth one day cease to be a limitation? Is it really a limitation today? |
PROGRAMMING
 | How did you begin programming and at what age? I started looking at basic VB scripts around the age of 14 then moved onto looking a C and quite quickly onto Java around the age of 18. |
 | What languages do you code, and in what platforms? Mostly use PHP but also know Java, JavaScript, C# to an extent and XML.
Quite a big Windows fan but Linux is a must for server environments |
 | What machine configuration and operating system do you use? Currently use a combination of a Dell i5 660, 8Gb ram running 64bit Windows 7
or a custom build i5 750, 4Gb ram on Windows 7 32 bit. Dual Screens are a must! |
 | What part of project development is most gratifying to you? When you click 'execute' and you see your code come to life doing exactly what you want it to. |
 | What conditions do you need to concentrate when programming? Quiet. Tidy Space. Good Coffee. Good Music. |
 | What would be your solution against piracy? None, it's an impossible situation to control. The very nature of the internet is sharing. It's down to the individual, if a lot of people are just taking your media without paying, you need to ask yourself why. |
 | What are your favourite games and on what platform do you play them? At the moment definitely enjoying Bad Company 2 on Xbox 360. Eagerly awaiting Battlefield 3. |
 | In social settings, do people become interested when you tell them you are a software developer? It's more a look of confusion mixed with some intrigue. |
 | Are you one of the first to update to new software when it comes out, or do you normally wait until more stable versions appear? I love to update straight away in my own environment and try out all the new features. No way would I do or recommend this in any mission critical environment though. |
 | What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a programmer? Download a IDE like Eclipse or the best one for the language you want to learn. Find a good online resource or a good book on programming, I personally like the Deitel and Deitel books or Sams series. Start typing away and see what you can do. |
TECHNOLOGY
 | What is your professional position? What technology do you work with? Magento Developer. Mostly with PHP and some JavaScript. |
 | Were you one of those who broke toys to see the inner workings? You got to know how something works (or at least used to!) before you use it ;) |
 | Which is more difficult: dealing with machines or dealing with people? Aren't people just biological machines? |
 | Do you attend fairs, conventions, or other events related to your sector? Absolutely, the more the better. I love to meet new and exciting people. |
 | What advice do you have for those reluctant to try new technologies? If you don't move with the times, you will get left behind. |
PERSONALITY
 | If you were sent to a deserted island, which book, CD and film would you take with you? Book would have to be a Wilbur Smith book
CD - Hybrid Theory - Linkin Park
Film - The Godfather part II |
 | What was your first vehicle? I drove around in a Bright Green Suzuki Swift 1995. What a car! |
