 | What is your specialty in illustration? realism,starting to branch off into cartooning. Doing a series of paintings for a gallery show in the future. I am experimenting with water colour alot. To see more of my work I have two portfolio's on line

 | What are your regular clients like? What do they expect from you? Right now I am mostly doing private work for friends and family. |
 | Have you completed formal art studies, or are you self-taught? Both. Attended Sheridian College in Toronto after school for illustration then after my family grew up I upgraded to work on the computer. Attended an academy of Art In New York Via Internet. |
 | How did you get your first full assignment? What did it involve? my first client owned a tenis club and I did pen and ink illustrations for her advertising and also logo for the company |
 | What past or present day illustrators do you admire most? I love Norman Rockwell and Maxfield Parish. there paintings are fantastic. they capture life and their abilily to adapt to the commercial field is fantastic |
 | How similar are your current drawings to those you did as a child? As a child I was very gifted but my work had no backbone. I was slopy and never finished a piece because half done was always better then everyone elses. Till one day My grade 10 Art teacher gave me a poor mark on my work. When I questioned him about it He asked me if it was my A effort. I had to say no and then I worked like a mad man to make each new art piece better than the last. About 13 I developed a style and improved on it. It was due to my studies of bone structure and different technics that really turned my drawings around. And my determination. |
 | What was your favorite comic book as a child? Archie comics. Richy Rich, all those younge kid ones |
 | Do you have a particular style, or does it vary a lot? i defiantly have a style. I think all artists do. |
 | What is hardest to draw? To draw Nothing. to create now that is a different story. Cartooning , not that i can't just that I never did and i am not familiar with it |
 | What type of music do you listen to while you work? what ever i want to listen to at the time |
 | Do you have a favorite work of art? Yes. My paintings are starting to excell but my favourite is the pencil drawing of my first son and a drawing I did of a fetus in the womb. The first is at my mom and dads and the later is in an institution for unwed mothers. It was my best piece. |
 | What do you do when a client simply says "I don't like it"? Usually you do a sample first to get a feel of what they want. But usually they love it
But if a client says that i will get them to explain more and i will ask them lots of questions |
 | What new techniques have you been experimenting with lately? Water colour, computer painting, Photography, and airbrush. |
 | What part of your work do you do on paper and what part digitally? sketches, finished pencil renderings on rag board, watercolour paintings
I love to do my photography paintings on computer but also my cartooning i do on the computer and i like to do set up and design for more extensive paintings first on the computer to get a feel for composition |
 | What research do you do for your illustrations? i have 1000's of personal photo's that i have been taking for 2 yrs now. Digital photos are fast convenient and i have lots of friends that will pose for what i need. this is what i always wanted because it elimates copy right issues |
 | Do you have colleagues with whom you share techniques, tricks, ideas, etc.? my daughter. she is a fantastic artist and creative and can she cartooooon |
 | Do you have any specific goals as an illustrator? to get work yes but to enjoy my work and to see others enjoying it as well |
 | What illustration web sites do you frequent? i like to scan the web. youtube will have different artists demonstrating. Of course i have a portfolio on a number of different large web sites and i like to scan the work there |
 | What are you working on now? my children stories. |
 | What advice do you have for someone who likes to draw and would like to make a living from it? don't waste your money on bad art schools. Do your research. Market yourself lots. Advertise advertise advertise or get someone to do it for you. Again research it. Don't get scamed out of your profits. Sign all your work. All of it. And read contracts, All of it. Research Research your rights and beware there are alot of people who want to make money off of your talents. |
