Interview with:catherine moran [kittystitch]
DESIGN
What is your specialty? Textile Design
Where can we view your portfolio online?
What made you interested in design? I have always loved to draw, paint and create, and after a wrong career choice in beauty therapy I went travelling and had an opportunity to illustrate a book that a friend was writing. After this I decided I wanted to study art full time to make a living by being creative!
What has been your professional career path? After graduation from Universtiy of Brighton with a degree in Fashion Textile design with Business Studies, I was offered employment in a Textile Design studio in NewYork, where I worked for a couple of years. I then came back to the UK and worked on a freelance basis, using Design agents to sell my work.
| What is your motivation? What makes you get up in the mornings? I can't say it’s the money! For me the design process is just part of my everyday existence. As a mother of two girls I want to show them its possible to work in a job you love, and that life is about more than just making loads of money.
I find inspiration in every day life and objects, people, children and friends and in nature and the outdoors. |
How would you define your design style? I dont think I have a style as such. I work mainly for the childrens clothing industry, and for that my hand is quirky rather than too commercial. I design for girls and womens wear using mixed media, such as embroidery, printing onto fabric and applique.
How do you promote and move your work? My design work is promoted by my agent in London: Anne Davison design Studio. For my own smaller projects, such as handmade items, cards and prints, I sell one off peices in my online shop: Kitty Stitch: www.kittystitch.etsy.com
Shapes, color, concept: where do you usually begin when conceiving a design? It’s always concept. I think with textile design it has to be. The starting point will be defined by the season you are working towards, spring/summer or fall/winter. If I’m creating boys wear, its about finding imagery that will appeal to boys, and then building a story around characters that will bring the garment to life.
To a certain point, is copying justifiable? Theres no need to 'copy' another designer, but it fine to be inspired by the work of others.
Do you believe the newer generations are better at designing? From what I've seen the new generations are showing fantastic innovation and flair in design.
With which type of client would you decline in working for? I'd never decline work!!
Which software applications do you most utilize in your work? Photoshop and Illustrator.
If you weren't a designer, what would you be doing? I'd be teaching design, which is something I want to do soon!
At this moment, what would be your dream job or project? To be commissioned to design John Rochas next boyswear textile collection! Also to work on my own prints and have them selling like hotcakes!
Can you see yourself in this field twenty years from now? I would love to be creating in 20 years time, who knows what the future holds?
Which design resources online do you frequently visit?
