ARCHITECTURE
What is your specialization in architecture?
Although we specialize in housing and projects that combine commercial and residential spaces, our portfolio also includes utility and small-scale 'specials' and urban design projects. In addition to construction projects we also conduct feasibility and other studies.
Is there a web page or blog where one could see something of your work?
What is it for you a good architectural design?
To achieve a perfect urban or rural setting is an important goal. We strive for beauty, sustainability and usability.
What era of architecture most fascinates you?
Working in a team, criticizing and stimulating each other in order to achieve the best possibly result.
In which city do you live or work and why?
I live and work in Amsterdam, the city where I was born, raised and studied. The city where I started working as an independent architect after living and working in Barcelona and New York City.
Do you work with other architects? How is the team set up?
We share facilities with Change Architects and we combine capacities when useful. Moreover Kruunenberg Architects is one of ten architectural firms in Amsterdam united by a similar architectural philosophy. Together we maintain an informal bond for cooperating on larger projects by sharing skilled staff and for exchanging knowledge and experience.
What do you think of competitions? What types of competitions do you normally compete in?
Joining competitions is a perfect mean to develop new ideas, to explore architecture and to practice new tools and strategies.
Mantaining the signature of a building, how is the identity of the surroundings respected?
When a building is sound and thrueful it will almost automatically thread its neighbors with respect.
Which architects, past or present, do you admire?
In general the architects which projects I studied and visited during my professional education.
In your professional philosophy, what comes first, function or form?
That depends of the function.
Do you view suburban sprawl as an ecological threat and a waste of resources? Do you advocate for more vertical and denser town planning?
In general I do.
What will the single-family home of 2050 be like?
Look at our website. These homes are being build today.
For you, which new materials provoke the most interest?
Glass. Have a look at our glasshouse: http://www.2xu.nl/laminata.htm
Bioclimactic architecture, domotic systems...do you think we are approaching a profound revolution in architecture?
No, these developments are part of an evolution in architecture.
The pharahons built pyramids, and bankers skyscrapers: will architecture always be a symbol of power?
I am ufraight so.
Imagine your ideal house. Where would it be? What would it be like?
The house where I feel at home.
Can one copy and still be original?
Of course, everybody is copying, therefor we learn and make progress.
What motto would you like to see inscribed at the entrance of the university's department of architecture?
LOOK - LOOK OUT - LOOK AT - LOOK TO - LOOK AFTER
What would be your dream project at this moment?
When I sleep I rarely dream of architecture, but sometimes I dream of rare architecture.
