ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
I make art work using beads.Among the items i make include bracelets, head gear, decorate dresses using beads, etc. I am an artist because i create works of art using locally available items. Not very many people are creative and innovative as far as art is concerned so i consider myself an artist.
What is your message?
The best artist is God.He has created absolutely wonderful things which are hard to explain. His paintings do not color clash. So i want to give this message to everybody;there is nothing that beats ART!!!
Your biography in four lines.
My name is Lenny. I became an artist when i completed my High School education in 1997. There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing people marvel at the works of my creativity. Bead work is dynamic!!!
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
i have my bead work blog:www.tamaduni.blogspot.com
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
An idea is born out of the love for something. When i see something i love ,my inner soul starts being creative. Inspiration to me is when my dreams put on work clothes.I get inspired when i complete a beautiful piece that has attracted the eyes of a client.
What role does technology play in your creative process?
Technology enables me to advertise my work online as well as get clients to purchase my work.
What is art?
Art is whatever one does through the use of hands and a creative mind
When do you get your best ideas?
I get my ideas while walking around and listening to other artists and what they have to say about latest bead work.My clients also come up with ideas of what they want and it is up to me put their ideas into reality.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
My idea is good when my client appreciates the work he/she has ordered.
Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created?
1.The needle 2.Fishing line 3.Beads
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
Since i was a small boy i used to create toy cars using barbed wire.I also used old tins to make toy cars. This was the beginning.I was around seven years old.
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities?
Because they come up with ideas that don't seem to make sense to others and so most people consider them freaks.
Do you consider yourself postmodern?
Yes.Because art is a dynamic subject that requires one to put his ear to the ground so as not to be left behind.
How should a work of art be evaluated?
It should be evaluated on the basis of workmanship. How the work conveys a message to the admirers. The magnetic effect that draws people towards the work.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday?
Not necessarily.
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
Leonardo da Vinci
What do you think about public funding for the arts?
It is very necessary because it will help in the preservation of masterpieces as well as encouraging the artists to come up with more works of art.It will also encourage more artists to join this profession.
Is art necessary?
Of Course Yes! It is similar to asking if life is necessary.Art is the work of creation and we would not be here if God was not creative.
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold?
Very painfully indeed! Because as i create the art work it becomes part of me.Just looking at its beauty makes me want to stick to it forever
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought?
I would say it is the artist who is bought because the work did not create itself. Somebody must have created it to have the appeal it has emanated.
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased?
I feel that it is an honor and that the legacy of the artist continues to live on.I also feel that it encourages upcoming artists not to despair by thinking that they will be forgotten once they become deceased.
What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career?
They have played the role of streamlining the marketing of my artwork as well as purchase of raw material. They have also given me ideas and suggestions on how to satisfy the customer better.
What types of jobs do you usually do?
I make bracelets, headgears, mobile phone pouches, decorating dresses, making sash clothes, ceremonial necklaces, decorating leadership staff, decorating belts, earings, rings, wall hangings with animal prints, table mats, decorating ostrich eggs, decorating sandals, etc.
Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy?
Making bracelets because they are easier to make.
What advice would you give to those just beginning?
Do not despair.Always have a CAN DO attitude.
