Interview with:Leo Playa [leoplaya]
MUSIC
 | What do you do? What is your musical specialty? I play guitar |
 | Do you work alone or in a group? If in a group, who are the others you work with? I play in a few cover bands and tributes across the UK & Europe. I also have played in original bands and done some studio sessions signed with signed/unsigned artists. |
 | Is there a web address where one can listen, see, or read some of your work? www.leoplaya.com
www.myspace.com/leoplayauk1 |
 | How did you begin making music? Who introduced you? My family have a musical background. My mother used to be in a band with her brothers and sisters when she was younger plus my uncle on my father's side was a guitarist in a band in the 60's, I believe he even cut a record. |
 | What was your musical education? I started learning piano at 7 before going to guitar at 9. I attended Boden school of performing arts in my teens, I then studied music industry management & technology at university. |
 | When did you realise that making music could be a way of life for you? About 2003. I wanted to be known as a songwriter but started to realize that my main talent was the different styles of guitar I could play. |
 | Have you ever awoken with a melody created from your dreams? Probably not but I have been lying in bed and suddenly thought a of a riff or melody. Sometimes I've gotten out of bed and roughly made a rough recording so I remember it in the morning.
I don't do much songwriting these days but when I did I used to keep a notepad by my bed just in-case I thought of some lyrics whilst lying in bed. |
 | How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes? That's a tricky question. When I've recorded a tune I can spend a few hours listening to it & think it's doesn't need anymore but then I'll find something wrong with it a day or week later. |
 | What part of your job is your least favourite? Lugging all the heavy gear around haha |
 | How often do you practice? About an hour or two a day. Sometimes I can spend most of the day practicing to my neighbour's annoyance. |
 | How do you feel right before going out on stage? After all these years I still get excited before going on stage |
 | Which musicians or groups have been inspiring to your career? Jimi Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Prince, Guns N' Roses, Kurt Cobain, Ray Charles, Dr. Dre & B.B King to name a few. |
 | List three songs that are key to your life. Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
Prince & the Revolution - Let's go Crazy
Michael Jackson - Beat It |
 | What type of music do you detest? ANYTHING from X factor!!! |
 | What other things have you done to make a living? I've worked at a rehearsal studio plus I've been typecast as a guitarist in TV shows, movies and visuals. |
 | Who would you play with, without a doubt? Slash, Abe Laboriel Jr. (Paul McCartney's drummer) and Flea from the Chilli Peppers. |
 | What advice would you give to someone starting out in the business? Work out wot ur strengths are and also your weaknesses. Not to get offended by criticism but to listen to it and see wot you can do to up your game. Take ANY work that you're given as it you'll constantly be working with new musicians. |
