Interview with:Effrosyni Tsakiri [lilithians]
ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? I paint to express the complexity of my mind. I believe that this complexity refers to the complexity of the world, the complex perception of it, in particular. I aim to produce images open in various interpretations, in the same manner that literature allow each reader to create his personal vision of a story. The means to express "my complexity" are mainly Geometry and Juxtaposition. Esher is one of my favorite artists and the novel "Invisible Cities" of Italo Calvino is my current inspiration.
What is your message? Art is sometimes a painful but liberating neccesity
Your biography in four lines. I struggled very hard and long to find the proper way to express my self. For more than 20 years I was searching who I am, what may be my message to the world and how I could communicate it. After that period, I began to paint it. I produce 4-5 paintings a year and aim to publish my work about complexity within the next 3 years.
| Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it? The world of Lilith

How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? A novel or an everyday scene. I believe that there is a lot more than what we can see. I meditate to find out what it is and how it could be translated into form, using mainly geometry.
What role does technology play in your creative process? I use the internet as a databank for inspirations and to publish my work.
What is art? A state of being, a divine participation, a direct path and experience of truth.
When do you get your best ideas? whenever I listen to music, whenever I feel a bit upset, whenever I ask myself "why are you here?"
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not? I usually feel a deep emotion about it, but mostly I believe that time can test good ideas.
Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created? literature, music, painting materials
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist? when I realized that a life without art and expression is impossible
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities? because they see, they live in many dimensions, they feel alone and are wounded when people do not accept, believe, are willing to enter these dimensions.
Do you consider yourself postmodern? no
How should a work of art be evaluated? by people that can sense art and not by people that seek money
| Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday? yes -everybody does it anyway
no -he sometimes has to work outside time boundaries |
| Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work? Gustav Klimt, Esher, Sergio Toppi, the Classic Masters
Reading a biography can reveal a lot |
What do you think about public funding for the arts? Unfortunately I live in a country that public funding for the arts is not a priority...
Is art necessary? I believe that art is the endeavor or the human to re-create nature. Is nature necessary?
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold? always
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought? For me artist and artwork cannot be separated.
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is? By following my insticts
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased? I feel that this is normal, since art needs time to be correclty evaluated, but sad for the artist, since he is destined to live without the knowledge that he succeded to communicate a message, although I also believe that a good artist deep inside always know whether he communicated a message or not.
What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career? I have not so far tried to publish my artwork, so I do not know. However I usually see a lot of crup to be published and this is not an encouraging fact.
What types of jobs do you usually do? I paint, I teach art, architecture, design, history of art and I work as an architect in my private practice office.
Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy? I enjoy the fact that I can work in many different jobs at the same time, this is so reviving!
Do you personally collect any items? A lot of different items. I usually collect items from the nature with interesting shapes, and I collect wild mushrooms.
Which websites do you frequently visit? wikipedia
What advice would you give to those just beginning? work hard and never compromise
