Interview with:Lilian Wu [luthiea]
WRITING
What did you first read? How did you begin to write? Who were the first to read what you wrote? I read many books in my younger days but the one that really influenced me was David Eddings' The Belgariad and The Mallorean. His unique blend of fantasy, adventure and humour really inspired me but of course, before then, I was already writing stories. My friends were naturally the first to read my rubbish then.
What is your favorite genre? Can you provide a link to a site where we can read some of your work or learn something about it?
What is your creative process like? What happens before sitting down to write? Ideas will suddenly occur to me when I'm doing something else. When that happens, I'll quickly find something to jot it down. Then when I can sit down to write, I sort of have an idea what to write.
What type of reading inspires you to write? Fantasy...the ones that bring people to another world for a few hours.
What do you think are the basic ingredients of a story? The plot, the flow of its sentences and the usage of appropriate words to set the mood.
What voice do you find most to your liking: first person or third person? I prefer third person.
What well known writers do you admire most? David Eddings, Mercedes Lackey, Laurell K Hamilton, etc
What is required for a character to be believable? How do you create yours? My characters are always based on several someones I know. But sometimes, I try to imagine a character that I would like to be if I were born in a fantasy world, thrown into a particular situation. I like to create characters who are cool in their own ways but vulnerable at the same time.
Are you equally good at telling stories orally? Yes...
Deep down inside, who do you write for? I write for myself. But I also write to bring joy to other people's lives.
Is writing a form of personal therapy? Are internal conflicts a creative force? I guess you can say that. I find that I write best when my emotions are stirred up so in a way, internal conflicts are sort of like a creative driving force for me.
Does reader feed-back help you? Yes, I try to see things from their point of view and write better to add more details or more flesh to the character, etc.
Do you participate in competitions? Have you received any awards? Yes, from time to time but I've yet to receive any awards. =)
Do you share rough drafts of your writings with someone whose opinion you trust? Yes...from time to time.
Do you believe you have already found "your voice" or is that something one is always searching for? Yes, I've pretty found the voice I want to write in and I aim to push it to higher levels.
What discipline do you impose on yourself regarding schedules, goals, etc.? I tell myself I have to publish a novel by the age of 30. I'm sort of working towards it so I won't be giving up anytime soon.
What do you surround yourself with in your work area in order to help your concentrate? Books and music. Music helps me write a lot better. =)
Do you write on a computer? Do you print frequently? Do you correct on paper? What is your process? Yes, I write and correct on a computer but I don't print my work out unless I want to show it to someone who prefers to read it in print. I occasionally write on paper too.
What sites do you frequent on-line to share experiences or information?
What has been your experience with publishers? So far...quite ok, although I've never really been accepted by one before. =)
What are you working on now? A novel titled Rainy Skies. I'm halfway through it and I'm collaborating with my friend to do a manga version on it too. I also got my friends to cosplay my characters from the novel as well.
What do you recommend I do with all those things I wrote years ago but have never been able to bring myself to show anyone? Bring them out and dust them off a little. Rewrite if you wish but at least show it to someone you can trust to give you an honest opinion.
