ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
I'm a makeup artist and paper crafter. (the 2 have nothing to do with the other!)
What is your message?
Everyone is a star and deserves the right to twinkle!
Your biography in four lines.
I've been a makeup artist for 10 years. I adore everything there is to makeup! After the birth of my first child, i needed a creative outlet to do at home, that didnt require a model, actor, etc. So i started paper crafting. Since then i started my own stamp company and teach certified copic classes.
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
Yes i do! The best place to start is http://katiecotton.blogspot.com it will point you to the various websites you can see my work! But the main one for makeup is www.katieshawger.com and the main for papercrafting is http://papermakeup.blogspot.com
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
Inspiration can be found EVERYTHING! Sometimes it comes from a new product. Sometimes from an abstract picture. Sometimes its just something funny one of my kids did. Really, i get ideas from the strangest places!
What role does technology play in your creative process?
Technology has been a great way for me to share what i know! I'm now regularly filming video tutorials of both makeup and coloring and uploading them to youtube so i can share the knowledge i have with everyone! (youtube channel is makeupartistkatie)
What is art?
I could write a dissertation! But in short, art is what you make of it! A creative idea born in your brain brought to fruition by your hands (whether in a physical manner or technologically speaking)
When do you get your best ideas?
Usually at night, when the kids are asleep and i get moments to myself!
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
test it out!
Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created?
well whoever first patented waterproof mascara was pretty durn smart! haha. but i dont really know how to answer this. :)
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
My parents are artists. I was raised to think creatively and be creative. So i guess since the womb. haha!
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities?
there are just as many non artists with volatile personalities. Being an artist does not make one volatile. However, i do think that artists are better at expressing themselves, so if they do have a volatile personality, you're really going to see it.
Do you consider yourself postmodern?
No. I like postmodern art. But i dont think makeup really classifies itself in that way.
How should a work of art be evaluated?
it shouldnt. To each their own. There will always be someone who loves a specific work of art, and another who will hate it. As long as you like it, be happy.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday?
An artist must continually be challenging him or herself. And never stop honing their craft. That does not mean they need to reinvent him/herself. Just dont stop creating.
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
Kevyn Aucoin. He believed in the same values of makeup artistry that I do. That there is not any 1 way or any 1 product that must be used. To continually expand your knowledge and to be free with that you want to create.
What do you think about public funding for the arts?
I think that is art dies in schools, the future of our world is a scary place. If public funding for art were to cease, a lot of artists would not be able to survive financially. Point blank, most artists do not make a lot of money. Some do, but the money is not what drives an artist to create. however we must all live. So some degree of public funding i think is necessary to keep our world happy and rounded.
Is art necessary?
Is this a trick question. Can you imagine a world with no creative thought? Art is absolutely necessary.
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold?
everything i create is meaningful and special to me. I take photographs of everything i make. I like to have some record for myself of what i've done. But it prides me when someone else wants to pay money for something i did.
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought?
Its the work of art created by that artist. Someone might buy 1 artwork, but not necessarily love everything that artist does.
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is?
Let your heart lead you.
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased?
i do wish that more living artists got the limelight. There is definitely a place for those deceased. But if the goal is to show what is now, then the artwork should be now!
What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career?
they havent. it's not my field of art.
What types of jobs do you usually do?
makeup for various things. cards and papercrafts mostly for friends, sometimes they are sold. teaching both makeup and coloring with copic markers
What advice would you give to those just beginning?
never give up. continually practice and try new products, techniques, and styles. Find what works for you. Study others that work in your field. You might find something that works for you but you learn just as much by finding something that doesnt work for you.
