Interview with:Marie Theron [marietheron]
ART
Your biography in four lines. I qualified as an art teacher in 1964. I taught High School Art and later lectured 'Flowers in Watercolour' to adults. I have also done book illustration and stationery design. Since 2000 I became a full-time artist with local and international exhibitions.
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? Inspiration is all around you. Everything is a potential theme. I do not have enough time to paint all the vignettes of dailly life that catch my eye.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday? Not at all. Work steadily towards a solution. After a few years, try something new.
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work? The work that Macke did in his short lifespan was so delightful. Like many artists I love Matisse. My favourites are the German Expressionists. I think that the linework, distortion an rich colour in my figures and still life paintings derived from their work.
What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career? Galleries can build your reputation and of course, nobody will ever say no if a good agent knocks on the door! Still, I prefer to find hosts and sponsors and interesting venues and organise my own shows. The website also work well for me, to spread my work throughout the world.
Do you personally collect any items? I have a large collection of very small works by well-known South Africans. The idea is to frame all and fill a wall with them one day.
