Interview with:Mark Andreani [markandreani]
PHOTOGRAPHY
Do you have an online gallery where one can view your photos? http://www.markandreani.com
For how long have you done photography? How did you begin? 25 years or so, began in school as a teenager.
What has been your education as a photographer? Self-taught
Please list any exhibitions in which you have participated. None
Please list any awards for your work. None
What is your favourite type of photography? Documentary and travel, though I normally shoot advertising and fashion for commercial clients.
What do you try to express through your photography? I try to answer the client's brief and present the product in a way to maximise sales for the client. Nothing else.
How do you choose your subjects? The client brings them to me.
What type of preparation do you do before undertaking the photo session? How long is a piece of string?
Do you normally photograph with a purpose already in mind, or do you let yourself go with the flow? Commercial work needs to answer the brief, so there's a purpose involved! My own personal work is different.
| Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sigma, Olympus, Sony, Pentax...which do you place your bets on and why? I don't bet on cameras, I use them. For commercial DSLR work, Canon for the most mega-pix for your money, the simplest and most intuitive camera operation, and the largest and best choice of DSLR lenses, plus of course APPLE computer hardware.
For high end fashion work, Hasselblad medium format or with digital back, though the new Leica S system will be a consideration.
For my own personal work or longer term book projects, 35 mm film, Leica M and also Olympus OM series SLR.
I've tried most of the others, these are the best. |
Describe your current equipment: cameras, lenses, computers, accessories... See previous answer
What software and plug-ins do you use to retouch and manage your photos? Apple Aperture and Adobe Photoshop, beer and whisky, you don't need anything else.
What measures do you take to protect your work against Internet piracy? None, if people use the low res images on my site, I'm flattered.
Are you a good salesperson of your work? In what should you improve? -
Which past masters of photography do you most admire? I don't have the time or space to answer that here!
Are technology and digital retouching reducing the gap between professionals and amateurs? No.
| What is your team of habitual collaborators like? What are they like to work with or who are they???
I mostly hire hair/m/u, assistants, stylists, 3rd part retouchers. |
With which other photographers do you normally team up with or do sessions with? I don't normally work with others.
Do you consider yourself more technical or more artistic? Like most arts, photography uses technical skills to create an artistic end, therefore I'm a skilled technician who occasionally produces works of artistic merit.
What have you learned about the art of framing and composition? Make it good.
How does one develop the instinct of knowing when to press the shutter release button? See what looks good, press that little pinky...
When should one use film, and when should one use digital? When should one drink beer, and when should one drink wine? Digital's a commercial decision and demand for my work. Film work ends up as digital anyway, but smaller, lighter, better quality equipment and results which don't rely on having to charge a battery speak for themselves...
Does photography have the recognition that it should have in contemporary art museums? Contemporary art museums have far too much recognition as it is. I don't want any of my pictures to be under the same roof as that 'art'...
Which websites for photographers do you frequently visit? too many to list
Is there any particular technique that you could share? Better quality light, get closer.
