Interview with:Nada Meeks -Illustrator [nadameeks]
PROFESSION
 | What is your profession? What is your title printed on your business card? I am an Illustrator. With a B.F.A. in illustration from the Ringling School of Art and Design. Over five years of working experience and a love for what i do. |
 | What did you study and why did you choose to study that field? I have always studied creativity. I love what the mind can do, I love sharing that knowledge and gaining more of it. I believe that threw creativity we share a little bit of our souls with others, with the world. I simply fell into illustration as the professional expression of this belief. |
 | What is expected of you in your job, and how do you accomplish it? At each job something a little different is expected. But all expect me to express there ideas in way that is more than they could tell me. But exactly the way the client wishes to say it.
I accomplish this by making there dream mine. There goals my goals and then expressing this new want in artistic form. |
 | What links do you have on the Internet: website, blog, social networks? |
 | Are you satisfied with the education that you received? Yes and no, I believe that I am well educated; that I understand more than some artist about making art both my love and my business. But like everyone some days you have doubts. You find things that make you wonder why did none of your teachers ever bother to tell you this or that. In the end, Self discovery is still the greatest teacher. |
 | How do you feel about speaking in front of an audience? What experience have you had in this arena? I love speaking. The daughter of two teachers I have taught and instructed others most of my life. i find that in teaching/speaking we learn as much as our audience does about who we are , what we do, and what we teach. |
 | Do you attend cocktail parties, presentations, fairs or conventions related to your profession? yes, I find that by attending any and all events i can make time for is a good way to find the people need and to help people find me. |
 | Have you explored the social networks for professionals online? Are you member of any of them? I am currently working more on that as I don't usually have a lot of time to search threw all the things I need to online to make it work for me. |
 | How are you different from others in your professional sector? Well, as I have more than one sector to focus on I will start with my own work. As a writer/illustrator. I try to create works that are for young and old each time I create. I make art work in the community and for the community by making use of local facilities and models in my work. So that every one can feel apart of the arts. |
 | How is the Interent changing the way you work? Like this interview, more things can be done from my home office. I can reach more people with the touch of a button and find opportunities within opportunity with search engines. |
 | Do you feel your hobbies serve to elevate your career? Absolutely, my hobby is my carrier. I am eternally drawing sketching writing and that’s what I love to do. If more people could do what they love (because lets face it more people love there hobbies than there carriers) the business economy would improve with professionals good at what they do who love what they do |
 | What is the most important thing you have learned from experience? Never give up. |

ART
 | What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? I breath life into dreams.
As an artist I seek to evoke emotion with images. to speek without a voice. Of all the things I have ever done I love none as good as dreaming. So I seek to create the dream for others. for my self. for my work. I believe that dreams are what fuel our tomorrow. To contribute in any way to that is my greatest achievment as an artist.
"For all that we see or seam is but a dreams within a dream." |
 | When do you get your best ideas? My best ideas have a way of surfacing at unusual times. 3am wile stuck in a traffic jam but even though they show up at annoying times they always brighten my day. |
 | When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist? I saw my self as an artist the minute I desided to presue it as a professional goal. |
 | How should a work of art be evaluated? I always begin evaluation with the artistic basics which are good for any and all art forms.
1. Composition
2. Perspective
3. Function
If the art piece meets all of those criteria it is fundamentally 'good art' then points are given or taken away based on smaller criteria.
Attention to detail.
Clean lines (especially in digital work)
Consistent style with in the piece
Does the piece feel complete?
Is the piece appealing? |
 | Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday? Absolutely not, the art market as it is still looks for a consistent style when hiring. Expensive advertisement markets do not want an artist that is going to change tomorrow the style they paid for today. Being able to show a large body of consistent work goes a long way.
However, we as artist have an itch to constantly reinvent ourselves. So go for it, but each reinvention should be a private collection for yourself until you find the one that shouts and sings. |
 | What do you think about public funding for the arts? A definite necessity, artist in general have a hard way to go the public wants beautification of homes and streets and business , but they see artist as frivolous , and lazy not worth there time and money. Most artist live in there heads (because that’s where the pictures are) and have a hard time with the mundane world, but just because someone/something is different does not mean it isn't worth while. Our imagination fuels the future, images of fancy expand the mind and what starts off as and imaginative day dream can become tomorrows reality (computers, microwaves, blue ray disk ect.)
“Reality is the only illusion, all be it a very persistent one "- Albert Einstein |
 | Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold? It is always painful to let go of something you love . An instructor once compared his art to one of his children saying " I could no more sell one of my children than one of my paintings." |
 | What advice would you give to those just beginning? Exposure is Everything. |
