Interview with:

Nola Bartolo [nolaray]

WRITING
What did you first read? How did you begin to write? Who were the first to read what you wrote?
I really do not remember my first book...however I read a lot of Enid Blyton. I always loved writing poetry and the first of my poems that was read was at my grandfather Joe's wake. I wrote a poem about him...and I allowed my family to read it. I was 12 years old. Death and the passing of mankind has always had an impact on me and I think that for a young person writing was the best way to release the emotions.
What is your favorite genre? Can you provide a link to a site where we can read some of your work or learn something about it?
I just love poetry and song writing. I also am working on a screenplay. It is currently a short screenplay but I would like to make it a feature length. My work is mainly poetry and I have been working with a musician on turn my poetry and prose into song. All of my work is a reflection of my life. Here is a link to my work. http://www.dreamagic.com/poetry/bartolo.html
What is your creative process like? What happens before sitting down to write?
I write mainly in the late evenings when my family has long gone to sleep. I have urges to write and I find it cathartic as I release it onto paper. I much prefer putting pen to paper and then I transfer it to the modern age. ;-) I find that when my emotions are extreme I write often..If I am happy and overwhelmed with emotion I write, if I am inspired I write, if I am down and missing love I write, if I am excited I write.
What type of reading inspires you to write?
Poetry...poetry....poetry! Dreams inspire me to write also. I find that my writing reflects my dream world.
What well known writers do you admire most?
Emily Dickinson, Christina Rossetti, William Blake, Robert Browning
Are you equally good at telling stories orally?
Yes I love to act also. I studied theatre and film at university. My love is for the oral story. I guess that is why poetry attracts me as I see poems as soliliquies.
Deep down inside, who do you write for?
myself...always myself. Also for those that I love...Love inspires my work..love gained and love lost.
Is writing a form of personal therapy? Are internal conflicts a creative force?
Absolutely! It allows me to express emotions that I might otherwise keep under wraps.
Does reader feed-back help you?
yes
Do you share rough drafts of your writings with someone whose opinion you trust?
yes I have a special friend that gets to read the raw releases.
Do you believe you have already found "your voice" or is that something one is always searching for?
I think I have found "my voice" although I think that what it tells me is always changing. That is the beauty of it!
What has been your experience with publishers?
I have never worked with a publisher...not yet anyway
What are you working on now?
A collection of my life's poetry
