Interview with:

Nyandia Kamawe [nyandia]

CREATIVITY
How and why did you begin to be creative?
I started as a child always wanted to make things. I would make little crafts, and I remember making collages with beans, soil, and anything else I could get my hands on, string painting, toothbrush painting, weaving, knitting, sewing etc and just thinking this must be heaven! The process of taking something and making it something else or combining elements to rebirth a new idea was just iresistable to me, so I can say that was the why.
Your mind is your work tool. How do you take care of it?
I take care of it by learning something everyday, reading, looking at things that dont necessarily appeal to me and trying to understand them, and finally physical exercising (my least favorite).
Do you have a ritual like retiring to a lonely place from time to time to cleanse your mind?
Hmm...I don't have a ritual (at least not one I have identified). I do love solitude probably too much and I guess because I do spend most days in my office at home alone I don't ever have to get away, am always away.
What cultural sources do you draw from the most?
I think that changes from job to job for me since every opportunity to create is different.
Who have your teachers been?
My teachers have been so many along the way, my father as a kid (he rocks with a pencil), my school teachers, and just people in general. I believe that every encounter is an opportunity to learn something new and I try to keep an open mind as I interact because I have found stellar lessons in the oddest places.
"To give birth to ideas." Is this only an expression, or are there really parallels between giving birth and creativity?
I can definitely say there definitely is a parallel. It is something that you feel start to stir around in your minds eye, you feel it coming alive and growing, and you see it when its complete in art form. Now that said, I have never given birth so...that opinion may change one day.
It is possible to fall in love with a bad idea simply because it is yours. How do you avoid this?
I think you can tell when an idea is bad, the key is just being man/woman enough to admit to yourself that it is bad. I feel it in my bones when it just isn't working, just like I do when it is working. I also have people whose opinion I trust in my life that will tell me if its not working so that definitely helps.
Must someone be the leader or boss in order for a creative team to function well?
In my opinion, no, but what do I know? I believe teamwork is there to help make it easier so if a team is well assembled, it works period. If it is a team of all creative people, each one would be the boss of their part of making it happen if not, there are too many cooks in the kitchen.
Declaration: With what person or business would you like to work?
I work for myself and I cannot think of a better person to work for!
The armchair psychologist: Is creativity an act of rebellion for you?
I don't think so, but, if I woke up and couldn't be creative, I would definitely need a psychologist!
Do you work well under pressure?
Yes, I do and unfortunately am starting to realize that the pressure part for me makes it even more fun!
What city in the world currently attracts you due to its creative environment?
New York
What do you feel when, after two or three years, you see an idea of yours again?
Proud that I have a creative past, and then the criticizing begins. I pull it apart, and look at a million things I could have done differently.
You are as good as your last idea. Wouldn't you like to have a more secure type of work?
I would be very insecure if I couldn't be creative, so no. I will work at being better and growing everyday so the next is always better than the last.
DESIGN
Where can we view your portfolio online?
www.kamawedesigns.com
In which new areas would you like to experiment?
Motion Graphics, 3D Modelling
Shapes, color, concept: where do you usually begin when conceiving a design?
Always have to start with concept that is where the power is!
What is your favourite type of customer?
The one that really understands what they want, has clear goals in seeking out a designer, has done their research and understands pricing of the services they are seeking.
To a certain point, is copying justifiable?
Absolutely not! Regurgitating ideas is really not creative and beats the point of what I am here to do.
If you weren't a designer, what would you be doing?
A chef
