Interview with:

Owen Gurry [omgurry]

MUSIC
What do you do? What is your musical specialty?
I am a session guitarist and writer. My speciality is music for broadcast.
Do you work alone or in a group? If in a group, who are the others you work with?
I work both alone and with a co-writer/producer depending on the project.
Is there a web address where one can listen, see, or read some of your work?
www.OwenGurry.com has my most recently demo/montage and an up to date CV/resume with links and additional audio.

www.JamTracksForGuitar and www.eBooksForGuitar.com are 2 of my recent projects.
Please list discography in which you have participated.
my credits are available at www.OwenGurry.com
How did you begin making music? Who introduced you?
I originally wanted to play guitar because I loved Green Day and Bush. I soon became obsessed with Pink Floyd and David Gilmour and that led me to more technical players. But before then I loved Michael Jackson as a kid and he had some terrific guitar players over the years so that must have made an impression.
What was your musical education?
Largely self taught but I also spent some time studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston (MA, USA) both in person and online. I have also had private tuition from Phil Hilborne and Benji Bartlett.
When did you realise that making music could be a way of life for you?
I originally didn't think it could be. I followed a more traditional route by studying a degree in Psychology and then a masters in Neuropsychology. I had promised myself that once I had a "safety net" I could do what I loved. The masters led me to work as a statistician for a while, which helped afford a trip to Berklee. When I got back, I went pro!
When do you have your most lucid moments, in the morning or night?
Definitely the night
How do you know when a song is finished or needs no more changes?
usually when the client is happy or it fits the brief.
What part of your job is your least favourite?
Negotiating being paid fairly!
How often do you practice?
Mot as often as I'd like to anymore but as often as I can.
Which musicians or groups have been inspiring to your career?
Early on Michael Jackson and his musicians/producers. Then bands like Green Day, Bush, Skunk Anansie. Now I'm particularly inspired by all sorts of people - Xenomania, SiKth, Vanessa Carlton, Dave Martone and a huge list more...
What should be done to stop piracy?
People like owning the legitimate material. I think people generally choose piracy when the product is prohibitively expensive or they want to try before they buy. Record labels need to adapt to a changing market where consumers are more in command and less dictated to than in the past. DRM is a bad idea.
What type of music do you detest?
I don't think I've ever hated any music - It's all the same 12 notes after all!
What time did you get up this morning?
This morning I had a session for Music4 so was up at a respectful 8 AM
What other things have you done to make a living?
session work both live and in the studio for artists, session work for music production houses and writers, writing and co-writing library and production music, tuition, tuition websites, writing, producing and selling jam tracks (www.JamTracksForGuitar.com).
What advice would you give to someone starting out in the business?
That's a tricky one but I guess it's the same tricks to life in general - having a good attitude and working hard go a long way. So do being in tune, in time and on time!
