ENTREPRENEUR
What is the business idea that you are working on right now? How did you come up with it?
A small beachfront motel in Prince Edward Island Canada.
I found this charming little motel on the ocean/beachfront and I knew that I had to spend my summers there. I also realized that it's proximity to the beach and to the fishing harbour was pretty rare in PEI so I knew others would love it as well.
Is there a website, blog or social media link where we can see more about your project and/or yourself?
What is your professional background? What were you doing before?
I worked in one of the top hotels in Canada for over 20 years and as a result, I have exceptional customer service skills.
I also have experience buying and selling real estate.
How did the entrepreneurial spirit rise up in you? Were you exposed to entrepreneurship in your family or your social environment when you were a child?
My Mother was always a bargain hunter and was very creative when it came to saving money. Her motto always was "Buy the best...but get it on sale".
I also went real estate hunting with her from the time I was a teenager
Do you have partners working with you on this? How do you split the work with them?
No.
What have you achieved up to now? What have you yet to achieve?
I doubled the revenue the first year and in the 2nd year, I more than tripled the revenue of the previous year.
Entrepreneurs have a reputation as "control freaks." How do you avoid that?
I think it is necessary until you get the proper employees in place.
How do you balance work with relaxation?
When the motel is open, it is a 24/7 operation. It is only open for 4 months of the year
What is your main motivation: being your own boss, adventure and discovery, getting rich, doing good for others, or is there something else?
Seeing unrealized potential and building a strong, profitable business while spending the summer in paradise.
Up to what point is luck is important? How do you attract it?
I took on this venture because I saw a unique, beautiful property that I knew many people would want to visit. This motel's location is idyllic because it is just steps to the beach and it is in an authentic, uncommericalized area of Prince Edward Island. The luck came when the province started allowing Blue Fin Tuna Charter fishing (catch and release) because we are located right next door to North Lake Harbour (Tuna Capital of the World), we are a prime resting spot for sports fishermen from all over the world.
Which well known entrepreneurs/enterprises do you admire? Why?
Bill Davies of the Walton Group. He is an international property developer (currently proposing a $3.6 billion plan in Chicago). I had the pleasure of spending some time with him and was amazed by his rags to riches story. This man is truly self made and an interesting character to boot.
Are these times of crisis good for beginning a business?
It depends on the business.
How important have PR and social media been for you?
Word of mouth promotion has been very important and the social media has allowed me exposure to a global market.
What skills would you advise a want-to-be-entrepreneur to acquire?
Self discipline and organization combined with an artistic eye.
