Interview with:Penny Comeaux [pennyc]
ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? I paint watercolor paintings of children. An inspiration to children on paper.
What is your message? The paintings tell the story. I want to bring the purity of children back to the arts.
Your biography in four lines. I began painting children because I was moved with compassion when I saw very little pure children's books. Children need to be encouraged and know that God has a plan for there lives and there is a hope for the future.
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it? The website is http://watercolorkids.blogspot.com
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? Passion, compassion - everything comes from the Spirit or from the Heavens. Each painting takes about 2 1/2 hrs because it is sort of a prayer time where I'm hearing from Heaven - amazing things happen for me so I know that its going to happen for the ones who receive.
What role does technology play in your creative process? A great deal because this helps to reach the people that one could not reach without it.
What is art? To me, art is an expression of feeling or love captured by ones eye, heart or very being.
When do you get your best ideas? It happens at different times. I will actually see a glimpse of it before starting.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not? If it touches my heart.
Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created? I love Beatrice Potter and her story and thats enough for me.
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist? When I was a little girl and I sketched a picture for a magazine, sent it off and someone came to my home to offer me a partial scholarship but because of living in poverty, was not able to accept.
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities? I didn't know they do, but if that is the case - probably because they have not been born again by the Spirit of God. We are are sinful in nature and only God has the power to change our character.
Do you consider yourself postmodern? I don't know what that is, I live in modern days if thats what you mean.
How should a work of art be evaluated? It shouldn't, each artist should be seen for who he/she is as an artist. Everyone has different taste.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday? Well, I believe we have to be renewed - ha!
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work? Beatrice Potter - she loved her characters, loved art because it came alive - she saw through children's eyes and she had a purpose in life, although I don't believe she knew it. It was her heart just to love what she did as a artist and God did the rest with circumstances around her life.
What do you think about public funding for the arts? I'll take some! Thank you.
Is art necessary? Absolutely - its a gift!
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold? :) yes, kinda.
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought? I'd rather say, its a gift and blessing.
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is? I don't - just follow the dream.
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased? Well I guess that falls under Hebrews where some died in the faith. I hope to see my dreams fullfilled on this side first.
What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career? Greatly, one can learn for everything.
What types of jobs do you usually do? Children's whimsical paintings.
Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy? All of them.
Do you personally collect any items? Art? no. Hearts, yes
Which websites do you frequently visit? facebook, blogspot.
What advice would you give to those just beginning? art classes, find what you love to paint.
