Interview with:

Susanna Ivy [photogravity]

PHOTOGRAPHY
Do you have an online gallery where one can view your photos?
I do but it is currently in maintenance. If you are interested in news about me and my work follow me on facebook: www.facebook.com/susannasworld or twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/photogravity_su
For how long have you done photography? How did you begin?
I take pictures since 19 years. It started with getting my first Canon from my mum. First I took numerous pictures of my pets, later of music artists and events. Meanwhile my love is into wildlife and travel photography even though I am happy to shoot what comes up since I think there is beauty and aesthetics in everything.
Please list any exhibitions in which you have participated.
In 2002 together with others I had a New York photography exhibition which took place in about 7 german cities including Berlin.
Please list any awards for your work.
Believe it or not - I won an award in local Ecuadorian TV. In 2010 I won an international competition and could travel to Galapagos. Check out my book with selected photos of it: http://www.amazon.com/Galapagos-Dreams-Photo-Journey-ebook/dp/B007V91FK2/ref=zg_bs_17163_5
What is your favourite type of photography?
Wildlife and Travel photography.
How do you choose your subjects?
I trust in the right moment as well as I observe closely several situations when I shot animals for example. Most importantly I never leave home without having at least a little camera with me.
What type of preparation do you do before undertaking the photo session?
Just checking my equipment and then go. All batteries charged.
Do you normally photograph with a purpose already in mind, or do you let yourself go with the flow?
Both. It depends what I am shooting. If its for someone or just for me. But I try to get a meaning / expression in my photo.
Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Sigma, Olympus, Sony, Pentax...which do you place your bets on and why?
I used to shoot with Canon and they have great equipment. Two years ago I became sponsored of Sony Switzerland and I do have to say their equipment rocks. Better bigger light sensitive sensors, fastest cameras and photo stabilisation in the camera body instead of the lenses. They have a big selection of lenses and with adapter you even can use your canon, nikon or other lenses on your Sony.
What software and plug-ins do you use to retouch and manage your photos?
I use Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. That's it. Not much more needed.
What measures do you take to protect your work against Internet piracy?
Block them from copy online. In the end you just have to trust in the honesty of people. My pictures are copyrighted.
Which past masters of photography do you most admire?
I admire most Steve McCurry who I was lucky enough to meet when I worked as photographer in New Zealand.
Are technology and digital retouching reducing the gap between professionals and amateurs?
Not really. In the end you can take a good picture or not which has way more to do with a sense than just buying a digital cam.
Do you consider yourself more technical or more artistic?
Definitely more artistic. I want to capture the moment and the feeling. It an advantage to know about technical things as well. But just technical alone doesn't make a good meaningful photo.
How does one develop the instinct of knowing when to press the shutter release button?
It just comes with practice. You will develop a sense...
When should one use film, and when should one use digital?
I prefere digital since I publish lot of photos online and i want to look at them right after.
