Interview with:

David Matthews [pukkadave]

SPORTS
What is your sport, and what level of commitment do you have to it?
Golf is my game . . . as PG Wodehouse has said, "the Noblest Enterprise Known to Man." my golf blog has the answers to any question one might ask, and I cannot bear to repeat myself. . . .more than necessary . . . like Johnny Carson observed about his stint on the Tonight Show, when he was retiring . . . "I've said everything I ever wanted to say . . . TWICE!"
BLOGGING
What is your blog address? What subjects do you deal with?
http://bohemianduffer.blogspot.com// golf in Europe http://ijustthinkitsfunny.blogspot.com/ I Just Think Its Funny http://janikdypoznat.blogspot.com/ I Will Never Learn
What was it that made you create your blog? On what date did you start it?
A compulsive desire to share my observations about Life, Love, Golf, Food, Drink, Sex, Humour, and one's own innate inability to profit from one's mistakes, despite the rather obdurate recalcitrance on the part of those around me, not to mention the ROW, to pointedly ignore my charming reminiscinces, to stare fixedly off into space, to yawn . . . I have been being ignored for over 5 years now, if you count http://thekokopelligolfstance.blogspot.com/ a serial rendition of a quixotic attempt to play all the golf courses in Phoenix . . .
What blogging system have you adopted and why?
Blogger. Why not?
How many visits a day do you get? What type of comments do you receive?
I don't have a counter anymore. kokopelli got 10 -15 a week at its peak, I have no idea now. Occasionally I do get what could pass for a fan letter, from someone trying to suss out which golf course to play in Phoenix . . . it is bewildering .. . .and they seem grateful for my assistance . . .
How has 'having a blog' contributed to your life?
it makes those around me content . . . they are not bored by my tales of birdie putts left on the edge of the cup, or miraculous trouble shots, or unfortunate, unfair bounces of the ball, or meticulous dissections of golf-course archictecture, since I put them on the blog, and in turn, I do not fee compelled to repeat myself, since I exhaust my raconteurial urges. I often note conversationally, that it is amazing how little interested people are in my missed birdie putts.
Have you created relationships with other bloggers or readers of your blog?
no.
How often do you post? Does regular posting of your blog require a lot of effort on your part?
the whole point is not to slave over it, but to vent . . . these are stories I would tell anyway, they pour out of me . . . it's just that the ROW is spared from their recitation. But blogging 18 holes at a good golfcourse is an arduous effort, especially with pictures, there are only so many ways to describe a drive, an iron, and 2 putts. It helps when my playing companions are colorful, but it's amazing how ordinary most golfers are.
Does blogging bring in income for you? Can one make a living from posting?
I cannot imagine a more pathetic enterprise.
How do you promote your blog?
I do try to "share" my blog, by giving itinerate playing partners a calling card with my URL on it . . . other than that . . . I can't be bothered.
How would you define your readers? Have you got a faithful audience?
highly intelligent seekers after Truth. There are only a handful. But even Jesus only had a dozen at the peak of his life, if you see what I mean.
Are there any blogs you follow daily or regularly?
No.
How do you see your blog evolving in the future?
Anyone with eyes can see that blogging is even now a dying pre-occupation . . . all the really clever people are on MySpace or Facebook now . . .
What advice would you give to someone who wishes to begin a blog?
Blogging must be a christ-like gesture of sacrifice to humanity to vent your own particular barbaric yawp into a convenient receptacle where it will be ignored by the ROW. . . I know it is for myself . . . if you do not share such philanthropic feelings, post on MySpace or Facebook instead. . . or simply start Twittering . . .
CULTURE
What do you currently have in your MP3 player?
A pandora mix that ranges from Billie Holliday to Moby & SBOL to RATM.
What books are you currently reading?
The Good Dr. Guillotine by Marc Estrin The Posthuman Dada Guide by Andrei Codresceu. Next Up. ReReading Good Soldier Sveck, by Hasek.
Places in the world that you have visited recently.
Prague, Bermuda, Armagnac, Amsterdam, NYC
What is that special film you never tire of watching?
A new film, even if its old.
What do you use: Mac or PC and why?
I don't do cults.
What is to come after consumist society?
One cannot say -- foretelling the future is like driving backwards on a dirt road at night without any lights (from Peter Drucker, I think) -- but it is safe to say that it will be on the end of the paradigm between Mad Max and The Bowery Boys, rather than Pollyanna & Little House on the Prairie
Do you find the saturation of advertising in the media excessive?
Mcluhanesquely, no . . .
Do you believe there is excessive sex and violence in the media?
yes, one can hardly watch the film anymore, for the antics IN the theatre.
What were your favourite subjects when you were in primary/secondary school?
History. I would add that the most troubling disappointment of my later life was the discovery that even History was Hokum.
Do you think video games, chat rooms, etc. have a dangerous addictive effect on teenagers?
as opposed to ? high school sports? x2c? nihilistic materialism? someone with two thumbs on a blackberry cannot get into too much trouble.
Has there been a personal-growth book that has transformed your life?
there must be an oscar wilde quote for this, but the best I can come up with is that for a personal growth book to transform you, you must be v-e-r-y shallow, indeed.
Have you ever bought works of art? What type of art? What compels you to purchase art?
I bought art from a friend in college. None Since. The knowledge that it was special and unique . . . a quality lacking in everything I've seen outside a museum since.
Do you defend urban graffiti?
Can one defend anything as "ART"? Can one attack anything as "ART"? Would not McLuhan say it was "ART"? Wouldn't any fair minded person agree the graffitist was expressing himself -- meaning that the graffitist would claim it was "ART" by virtue of that expression. Just like 3 lbs of penny candy in a corner, or 3 urinals that don't work, or cattle-guts smeared on a naked woman, or a cross-up-a-rectum, or a plain black canvas 10' by 10' . . . how could one attack graffiti?
Piracy continues to grow: What will happen to the music and film industries and culture in general?
what will happen will happen. there will be more artists. fewer will be millionaires. more live performances. more acoustic performances. more purposefully entertaining obsequity, instead of insolent posturing.
How do you explain the rise in "fame" culture?
the power of the LCD when compounded by commercial enterprise. just like health care has suffered from intrusion of the Profit Motive. Just like jurisprudence has suffered from intrusion of the Profit Motive. Just like Religion has suffered from intrusion of the Profit Motive. Just like Journalism, just like education, just like sports, all have suffered from the total capitulation of any ideal behind the activity to the aggrandization of the almight dollar.
How do you kill time?
I no longer have time to kill. TIme is killing me, now.
Where have you thought of going for your next holiday?
Sorrento, FLorence, Tunisia, Vienna
