What is "news"?
For me and my online magazine news is anything that affects the way a community lives its life.
To you, what is objectivity?
Objectivity really equals a healthy curiosity. An objective journalist is someone who is truly curious about finding out all sides of a story because their natural curiosity demands that they understand what really happened or how people are really viewing and event or issue.
Do you feel that analytical and investigative journalism is being lost?
Yes. Especially in our smaller communities. There needs to be more investigative journalism in our smaller communities -- more than just a press release that states the when and where. We need to ask "Why?" more often.
With a camera on every mobile phone, is every citizen becoming a correspondent?
I think that sort of yes. But as an editor of a magazine and a journalist there are some people who truly have an eye for capturing a story or an angle. Not every one has this talent to frame a moment.
What is your position regarding the right to privacy of famous people?
This is a tricky question. I think if you are in a public forum then you have to expect some loss of privacy. It is the nature of their career. However, I think every one has a right to privacy if they so choose to maintain a private life outside their public life. I think a famous person should be allowed to take their child to the park or school or church without the press intruding on family or private time.
What can you teach us about the art of the interview?
Invite your interviewee to talk. Find something in common, make your subject comfortable, make them relate to you and then invite them to tell you their story. Listen, Listen, Listen. Sometimes a story comes out during an interview that you did not expect. Don't be afraid to pursue the story you did not expect.
Would you say the journalism blog is revolutionizing the profession?
Absolutely!
Will the paper press disappear?
Eventually, I think the paper press will disappear. Although, I think there is still a need for a paper in small rural communities. Small rural areas will hold on to their community papers longest.
What is the book you would like to write?
There are so many books I would like to write. I just never finish them. I really want to write a historical fiction about my Swiss Italian Family.
Is there a motto or ethical principle that clarifies your decisions in moments of confusion?
Is it true? Am I writing this to reveal a necessary issue or topic or to indulge my own personal interests?
What advice would you give to someone who has just left university and wishes to start in the profession?
Listen to your editors. As a freelance journalist I learned the most from my editors comments and direction. I am grateful for every single one of them.
