Interview with:Amanda Trought [realityarts]
ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? As an artist I have many strands to my work and use many different mediums. For me my art is about stepping out of the box and the confines and allowing my creativity to touch as many different areas of my life and work
What is your message? You can count the number of seeds in an apple but you can't count the number of apples in a seed. We have so much inside of us that we have to allow creativity in at the very core of our being.
Your biography in four lines. I have been involved in the arts for over 20 years, I am a self taught artist. I am interested in the role art and creativity has on our lives and more specifically for the elderly with dementia
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it?
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? Inspiration comes from all around, nature, colour, poetry, God. I always have a note pad with me so that I can jot ideas down
What role does technology play in your creative process? I love working with my hands and feeling textures, and that comes across in my work, though I do value the use of technology and sometimes use it to expand or play with ideas.
What is art? Expressing what you feel inside, passion, creativity
When do you get your best ideas? Usually when I am no where near my materials, thats why its important for me to have a means for recording, sketching ideas. Also late at night when the house is still or very early in the morning 6am.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not? All ideas that come are good, but they may not be for that particular time. I often take the idea as far as I feel I can go, then I leave it and can come back to it later, (even after a couple of years!) When I have done this I have always had great results.
| Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created? The use of colour as a therapy
Pointism
The use and role of Art in health |
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist? In my early 20s when I realised that It was the one thing that I always went back to and my work had an effect on others
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities? I'm not sure they do - perhaps those who don't create find expression threatening, and find unpredictability unsettling
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday? No, though I think as an artist you must grow and change is part of the course.
| Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work? Kandinsky
Freda Kahlo
And a lot of others, for stepping outside of the box |
Is art necessary? YES
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold? I love to see my work go to a good home, though there are some pieces that are my favorite pieces, but I remind myself that my work is created to bless others.
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought? The art is purchased and you take away a small piece of the artist
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is? You set your own course, and see if you've said all you need to say in your work
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased? I think its really great to see all these art works, but I also feel that room should be made for living artists
What role have the figures of art dealer, gallery owners, representatives, and intermediaries in general played in your career? I have been representing myself so far but would welcome outside input
What types of jobs do you usually do? I paint and am involved with mixed media work, write and I teach art to the elderly with dementia,
Which of your jobs or tasks do you most enjoy? Working on new pieces of work, sourcing materials and being creative
Do you personally collect any items? I do like to support other artists when I can.
Which websites do you frequently visit?
What advice would you give to those just beginning? Do something creative every day, don't get hung up on time (even 15 mins) is valuable time spent. Make sure you find time to nurture yourself, check out Julia Cameron's - The Artist Way and go on regular artist dates!
