Interview with:

R By Reene Weston [reeneco]

CREATIVITY
How and why did you begin to be creative?
I was very young and lived in a world of fantasy...Hollywod glamour fantasy. I used to read my mother's magazines and would spend time looking at pictures of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Maureen O'Hara, Jackie O'nassis just to mention a few, and would fantasize that I was wearing their clothes. So my creativity pretty much stemmed from there
Your mind is your work tool. How do you take care of it?
I have a keen interest in Buddhism, so I do take time out and sit in a very quiet room away from it all. This is the moment when my mind is at peace with nothing buzzing inside it
How do you avoid repeating yourself, or falling into formula? How do you stay fresh?
I always watch trends and do a trend forecast. The thing with fashion is that it's like a revolution
Do you have a ritual like retiring to a lonely place from time to time to cleanse your mind?
Yes I do.This something that I really value. Some people find me odd but it's ok
What cultural sources do you draw from the most?
My life is a fusion of so many cultures that I have actually lost my original heritage. I suppose this is what happens when you have travelled widely, it opens up your world and you tend to see things differently. I have to say though that I do like the Italian culture in the sense that it's very family oriented and the food is simple but very refreshingly delicious! But I also like the Japanese culture...the respect and humbleness as well as their clever minds
Who have your teachers been?
Oh don't start me with teachers...I was good but I do remember Mr Yule, my Maths teacher. I was besotted with him. Childhood is a very funny thing!
When you accept a job, how much value do you place on each of the following? Money, creative liberty, visibility, and to work with the best.
When I accept a job, creative liberty trumps all and then working with the best followed by money...everyone loves money! Visibility is something that comes with sheer luck in my line of work. I am just as happy for a normal individual to wear my clothes and appreciate them as that is what it's all about.
Have you ever had a job that was so stimulating that you could not get your mind off of it?
All the time, my jobs are always stimulating
"To give birth to ideas." Is this only an expression, or are there really parallels between giving birth and creativity?
There are parallels because first you have an idea, then sketch it then source fabrics, cut the pattern and sample it. Do you get my drift?
Does spirituality contribute to your creativity?
Spirituality plays a part, yes
It is possible to fall in love with a bad idea simply because it is yours. How do you avoid this?
I always have a second opinion. It's important to me to listen to what others have to say. I surround myself with positive energy not 'yes' people!
Must someone be the leader or boss in order for a creative team to function well?
This is apparent...absolutely!
Declaration: With what person or business would you like to work?
There are so many people that I would like to with but the most of them all is unfortunately deceased...Mademoiselle Coco Chanel
What criteria do you use when selecting someone to be a part of your creative team?
I regularly go with gut instinct. The cv can say so many things except that they are simply appalling, usually this kind of individual is flashed out within a few weeks
The armchair psychologist: Is creativity an act of rebellion for you?
No
What is the best advertisement you've seen recently?
Nothing of late I'm afraid
Do you work well under pressure?
Pressure or not, I'm a hard worker
What city in the world currently attracts you due to its creative environment?
Cape Town
How is an idea sold?
That would be telling
What do you feel when, after two or three years, you see an idea of yours again?
If stolen I just let my legal team take over. But if it's my creation, I just love it because they are all meant to be everlasting and seasonless!
Ideas can come simultaneously to different people in different places with no connection to one another. How do you explain this phenomenon?
Is it a phenomenon that there may be someone out there who looks exactly like me?
You are as good as your last idea. Wouldn't you like to have a more secure type of work?
Ideas never diminish otherwise the earth would stop revolving
