How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
An idea is born through the people and places around you. The inspiration comes for helping people to see themselves for the better.
What role does technology play in your creative process?
Technology is a aid not the final result. We need to safe guard our individual uniqueness to make sure we are fully expressing our purpose as an artist.
What is art?
Art is a multitude of dimensions to see ourselves in our culture.
When do you get your best ideas?
The best ideas come by giving others hope and joy.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
We evaluate ourselves by how others see us. They see us as a reflection of who we are. If they like our work, they enjoy being with us.
Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created?
This is an uncomfortable question.
One, we must like ourselves.
Two, we must respect the life adventure we're on.
Three, what creative ideas I have been given are gifts from our Lord and God and they are to give Him glory.
I have no greater pleasure than to serve Him through the gifts He's given me to share.
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
Early in life and now my family has always encouraged me.
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities?
Everyone needs purpose. Not knowing that purpose cause destructive tension and anxiety.
Do you consider yourself postmodern?
Not really. We have such a rich resource in all history of art that we need to continually use it to mold the variety of ideas we create.
How should a work of art be evaluated?
Art should be evaluated by how it has accomplished the need for what it was created for.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday?
You've been talking to my wife, haven't you?!
I will be retiring from teach this next year and this is exactly her comment.
Yes, everyday we need to look at the world and be with it as it changes.
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
John Berkey, he was a friend of mine and enjoyed many years together as we would bring students to his studio. I admired him as a very kind and great painter of what can be.
Norman Rockwell, in him I admired all the things we would like to be.
Howard Pyle, for his ability and pioneering of artist he trained.
Maxfield Parish, his craftsmanship in very thing he created.
