Interview with:

Sally Anne Peters [sallypet]

ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist?
I work as an artist and curator. I paint and run workshops. My painting is inspired by the spiritual and usually involves a conceptual process of meditation. The workshops incorporate transformational drawing, movement and meditation. I have run two galleries and am in project mode for a major exhibition for 2010.
What is your message?
Love is the key, to all activities, joys and artistic endeavers. In my artwork I attempt to create work that tells of spiritual journeys, soul paths through long term symbolic language and intuitive mark making.
Your biography in four lines.
I finally took my artistic self to do a Diploma in Visual Arts in Brisbane, Australia. Having Directed and Curated a gallery in Melbourne for nearly 6 years and a brief contract as curator for 8 months in Brisbane 2008.
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration?
An idea is born through inspiration, it comes at any time, hopefully frequently! The will is important but without substance of purpose I am afraid I am left without response. The source of this inspirationfor me is through life itself, the intangible such as meditation, spiritual concepts and inner visions and tangible influences, such as people, nature, music, culture, ancient and recent history etc...
What role does technology play in your creative process?
Sometimes projects involve the use of digital processes, like photography and programs such as photoshop. Computers, the interne and so on are essential to my work in many aspects. For communication, research and promotion.
What is art?
Art.....that which is expressed or interpreted as a creative element of life/living, an expression or reading of things existent through being.
When do you get your best ideas?
When I am relaxed.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not?
Well most things are good, its just a matter of perspective, which can change for an individual depending on the kind of day they have had, or the social conditioning, or cultural preferences and openess etc. The root of something bad to me is that which is directed an intentional hurting, there is loss all round.
Three creative ideas that you would have liked to have created?
The Flamenco David Bowie's personal creative consultant The Pyramids
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist?
When I was a child I saw myself as a singing artist and actor as my sibling and I spent many an afternoon acting out vampire/disaster/ABBA/ films and dance routines. I looked up to him for his artistic abilities, which I was a shadow of his special talent.
Why do so many artists and creators have such volatile personalities?
Passion, either easily expressed or frustrated.
Do you consider yourself postmodern?
it is the post modern age is it not?
How should a work of art be evaluated?
Openly....
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday?
No, not necessarily. Just be flexible and ready for the new! I calculate an average of 100 days per year on average that an artist would reinvent him/herself! chuckle chuckle!!
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work?
That my friend is a huge question. Actually Rothko, Picasso, the Renaissance painters, Freida Kahlo are but some. I definably feel that the influence of Frieda is there and an (at times)overwhelming connection to spirit!
What do you think about public funding for the arts?
WHEN A COUNTRY HAS ALL THE NECASSARY ASPECTS OF LIVING IN PLACE SUCH AS GOOD ROADS, HOSPITALS ETC THEN OF COURSE THE ARTS MUST BE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE IDENTITY AND CELEBRATION OF IMAGINATION, VOICE AND STYLE OF THE PEOPLE
Is art necessary?
We do art therefore it is.........
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold?
No, much of my art has been ephemeral. Anyway art I wish to keep is not sold.
Is a work of art purchased, or is it better said, that it is the artist who is bought?
You buy the art, and as a bonus some of the spirit of the artists making.........
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is?
Forge forth
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased?
Fine, most galleries represent the living ones.

Professional connections Friends Sources of artists and avenues to explore career options
What types of jobs do you usually do?
