Interview with:Seymour Bergman [seymourbergman]
ART
 | What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? I studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan, N.Y.1948 on the G.I. bill of rights. I studied Graphics with Alan Lewis, Anatomy with Robert Hale and Painting with Nahum Tschbasov. I transferred in 1949 to the Brooklyn Museum Art School, Brooklyn N.Y. studied Painting with Reuben Tam and Graphics with Gabor Peterdi. My art is derived from my history and immersion in the physical/spiritual world, my family and society. A specific aesthetic rule or philosophy is only helpful and usable if it would aid my ability to express my thoughts and feelings, however, i feel free to utilize all of art history when it furthers my work. I work with meaning and beauty, i don't want either to be separate. I approach beauty through meaning and meaning via beauty. |
 | What is your message? I am a witness as an artist and a human being to the beauty and misery of our world as a member of one of the worlds smallest minority (Jewish) I like my work to express my love of our natural world and horror as a witness to the atrocities committed on ourselves
by ourselves. |
 | Your biography in four lines. I studied at the Art Students League in Manhattan and the Brooklyn Art School on the G.I. bill of rights during 1948 and 1949.
My father was an artist who immigrated from Palestine at about 1918-1919 and it was with his encouragement that i decided to be an artist.
i've shown my art at various venues these are a few; Brooklyn Museum N.Y., Howard University Washington D.C., N.J. State Museum, Weyhe Gallery Manhattan N.Y., Eonta Space Manhattan N.Y., Sebastopol Ctr for the Arts, CA, Luther Burbank Center for the Arts, CA, etc.
I am presently happily working in my studio in Healdsburg, CA |
 | Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it? www.bergmanartworks.com
www.artslant.com |
 | How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? Usually a small black and white sketch, about 2"x4", although recently i've been working from a concept. The small black and white sketches come from automatic movements which lead to a coherent or exciting visual idea. The concept came to me out of the "blue". |
 | What role does technology play in your creative process? The new mediums and paints open up and free my work. The internet and the use of digital images have been a great aid and a freeing of my technique. |
