Interview with:

Hal Manogue [shortsleeves]

WRITING
What did you first read? How did you begin to write? Who were the first to read what you wrote?
The first book that inspired me to taking my writing to another level was: The Essential Rumi Translated Coleman Barks.
What is your favorite genre? Can you provide a link to a site where we can read some of your work or learn something about it?
Poetry and essays are my focus. My work can be found on my website: www.shortsleeves.net and my Blog: http://halmanogue.blogspot.com/
What is your creative process like? What happens before sitting down to write?
I start writing before dawn. I begin reading one of the poetry or philosophy books in my office. I usually find a thought to build an essay around and I allow that thought to manifest on paper. I am the physical catalyst for that energy.
What type of reading inspires you to write?
Poetry, Philosophy, Zen and Tao teachings and works concerning consciousness.
What do you think are the basic ingredients of a story?
The physical and non-physical aspects of the self.
What voice do you find most to your liking: first person or third person?
First person. One aspect of self is writing to another.
What well known writers do you admire most?
Rumi, Rainer Maria Rilke, D.T. Suzuki, Shinkichi Takahashi, Ken Wilbur, William Blake, Jane Roberts, Emily Dickinson, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William James, Joseph Campbell and many others.
What is required for a character to be believable? How do you create yours?
Mine are self created based on the belief in multidimensional multiplicity.
Are you equally good at telling stories orally?
Yes, at times I use that ability.
Deep down inside, who do you write for?
My self and all consciousness.
Is writing a form of personal therapy? Are internal conflicts a creative force?
Yes, it is an expression of expansion and awareness. Beliefs and the manifestations of those beliefs create the contrast and conflicts. My writing explains the nature of the contrast and the conflicts without beliefs.
Does reader feed-back help you?
Yes, feedback is like looking into a mirror and seeing another image.
Do you participate in competitions? Have you received any awards?
No I don't compete and have not won any awards, except self-love.
Do you share rough drafts of your writings with someone whose opinion you trust?
No, but I write a daily blog and people are free to comment before my work is put in book form.
Do you believe you have already found "your voice" or is that something one is always searching for?
I have found a couple of voices and there are more to be discovered.
What discipline do you impose on yourself regarding schedules, goals, etc.?
I follow a set schedule. I begin writng before dawn seven days a week and finish around 5 in the afternoon. I take a break at 11 for exercise and lunch and resume writing at 1. I return to writing at 8 and write or read for another hour. My goal is focusing on the now and expanding my belief structure in that focus.
What do you surround yourself with in your work area in order to help your concentrate?
Nature, books and thoughts of well being.
Do you write on a computer? Do you print frequently? Do you correct on paper? What is your process?
Yes I write on the computer and am constantly editing my work. I don't use paper unless I am putting a book together.
What sites do you frequent on-line to share experiences or information?
I promote my work on various social networks like Facebook, the Authors Den, Ezinearticles, JasonsNetwork, and several others. I also submit essays to online monthy magazines.
What has been your experience with publishers?
None. All my work is self published.
What are you working on now?
I'm working on my fourth collection of Poetry: Short Sleeves Spirit Songs: Echoes of Silence and my second book of essays: Living Behind the Beauty Parlor.
What do you recommend I do with all those things I wrote years ago but have never been able to bring myself to show anyone?
It's all energy that has value. When you're ready to express that energy and share it, your impulses will guide you and choices and probabilities will manifest.
