Interview with:

Sigit Ariansyah [sigitar]

MOVIES-TV
What is your specialty? Production, direction, something else?
Now, directing, writing, editing. Actually I enjoy my long step of film making from when I was a 3D animator, editor, Art Director then videographer.
Is there a link to a site where we can see references to your work?
Sure! You can watch some of my works at www.youtube.com/sigstudio
How did you begin in this field? Who introduced you to it?
Well, since I was child, everytime I watch a movie, I feel that some scenes not have to be like was, but it must be like this or that (my own imaginations). Thats why then I like to write stories in some theater communities and enjoyed the making of several independent movies. But professionally, I begun with graphic design & photograhy, 3D animation, editing & VFX, then art direction. From there, I got my opportunities to direct many music videos and TV commercials projects besides feature films.
Which have been the most symbolic works of your career?
I think most of my works represented the thoughts of mine, if that what you meaned about symbolic. But surely, I’ve got more freedom to express when I worked for my own independent movies.
Do you work for a client, for the audience, or for your own creative adventure?
Except my own independent films, mostly I work for clients and audiences. You know, I work for commercials and music videos direction too.
What should a good script have in order to interest you?
I like natural and real as the way of my story telling, with unusual original content. It’s about how to create every single character and dialogue in its proporsional and logic mood.
Name three contemporary directors or producers that you admire.
Only three? Well, I like Akira Kurosawa, Martin Scorcese and Wong Kar Way
What movies or television shows inspired you to work in this field?
mostly films by Akira Kurosawa and Martin Scorcese
If an actor delivers the lines but is not believable, how do you direct him/her?
Mmmm.. it will be harder work then it was, but I already have some experiences with such cases. Usually I talk personally with him/her about many emotional things related to him/her and the script, I give some clue or keywords related to the performace, gestures, dialogues or expressions that the script needs. and in many cases it works.
What actor would you love to work with and what type of character would you propose to him/her as a challenge?
Basically I like an actor that I found in my production cast audition, which is directly related to the character on our running script. But okey, if you compelling me, I’d like to work with Salma Hayek for more touchy character in a rural Asian scenes. I imagine it will be great.
Are you the type who instantly knows when a take is good, or one who does another three takes to be safe?
Sure, I know is the scene going right (nice) or not, but technically it’ll be better when we have some backup takes, just in case we find any technical problem in the post production, it’ll be useful.
What type of direction are you used to giving the director of photography?
I have many DP showreels that I worked with. So, it’s not so difficult for me to find a DP that have the same point of view with my treatment for certain concept.
How interested are you in image technologies such as robotized cameras, special effects, etc.?
Love it so much. Experimental works whether it’s during production or post production will gives me some new spirits than stopping in convensional thought. Every updated technology will gives a new involve in my shots and scenes. That’s why it’s called creative work.
Which has been your experience with conflicts between direction and production?
Hoho... mostly all about budget ofcourse. But usually we have a solution to solve this, depend on technical difficulties.
Do you enjoy post-production, or do you prefer to leave that in the hands of other professionals?
ofcourse! some of my works I edited it my self. But I think it's not about to enjoy, it's more about the director's responsibility for the best result.
Do you approach an editing session with a clear idea of what you want to do or with an attitude of experimentation?
Usually I've fisinished with my concept during pre production. But sometimes I got more brilliant idea in post production, if it's do not bothering the whole first concept, I'll do it.
What magazines or websites of the sector do you follow regularly?
so many, it was. Now I mostly following many film and websites such as wildsound filmmaking and many film festival sites etc.
What is the best movie than you have seen in the last year, and why did it seem especially good?
Last year? mmmm... I think Slumdog millionaire. I think Hollywood has started to look out European, Latin and Asian movies which are more than just entertaining. A movie is not only about crashing in the high way or kissing before ending, it's about to say the truth of humanity and world global condition even sometimes it's bitter in taste.
Do you eat popcorn at the movies?
No! it bothering me with the sounds. Actually I need cigarettes while watching movie. Hahaha....
What do you think of public subsidies for cinema?
ofcourse I like
What respect does the reality phenomenon deserve? What experiences have you had with this genre?
You meaned Reality TV shows? I got some facts that reality TV shows mostly lies. They actually direct actors to do their scenes. It defferent with documentary films.
What works best for you when selecting an actor: an audition, seeing some of his/her previous work or having a long conversation with him/her?
Usually I did all of that
Do you like to have a second unit or do you prefer to control every still of a production?
I prefered to handled it my self
Do you change the dialogue after selecting the actors in order to adapt the characters to them?
Yes, not only to adapt the characters but sometimes also I did it in order to make a better beat with the shot, scene and ambiences.
Which do you like more, large budget or small independent productions?
I like both
Do you like to experiment with new technology immediately or do you prefer to wait for it to develop?
I love experiment with the new technology. Usually I read or watch the news about certain technology before splashing down into some experiments with it.
Is the future of cinema the Internet? Mobile phones?
They will be an alternative way to show your films up ofcourse in the low-res version of picture and sound.
Does the concept of interactive video stir up creative thoughts for you, or does it leave you cold?
I didn’t have any problem with that
What recommendations do you have for someone who wants to break into in the industry?
Firstly pray, be confident to think more creative and start shooting your own best film, then make many good relations with the new people of this industry. Finally always open your mind for every new development and ideas.
