Interview with:

Siobhan McDonnell [siobhan]

STYLING
What is your specialty as a stylist? fashion, salon, image, objects...?
My background is in Fine Art, Painting and drawing specifically. I also dabbled in tattooing for a while back in my early 20's, before settling on make-up artistry as my preferred art form!
Can you provide a link to a site where we can see something of your work or of where you work.
Alot of my work is on my myspace page. www.myspace.com/rainbowmakeup I also have a make-up channel on youtube. www.youtube.com/letzmakeup
In what style or trend do you classify yourself?
I'm quite eclectic in my make-up styles. I love and am drawn towards the vintage asthetic mostly. I do tend to be very girly and romantic in my approach sometimes!
What are your clients like?
A joy to work with for the most part. I've met very few difficult customers so far. Of course there are always going to be a few but it's not an issue. Mostly women obviously, ranging in age from 15 up to 60+
How did you begin to develop your talent? Have you possesed it since you were a child?
Crayons as a baby and it was up and away from there!! :)
What importance has professional training had on your career?
It has done what it suggests, and taught me how to approach make-up artisrty professionally. To know when to take things seriously and when to have a laugh also which is very important! It helped me to hone my existing skills.
When did you first realize you could make a living this way?
Only about 5 years ago actually when a friend of mine began working for MAC back home in Galway and I saw all the cool jobs she was suddenly working on!
What people or experiences have taught you the most and helped you to arrive where you are?
The Girl who runs the make-up school I studies in was a huge help and support. Besides that, the Internet!!
What is your concept of beauty? Why does it change so much from one culture to another, or from one era to another?
For me Beauty is form, shape, colour, tone, personality, kindness, individuality, courage, strength, softness..... A combination of all these thngs. The exclusion of some and The inclusion of some. Different cultures have different combinations, like foods!
Do you need to love what you do, or does professionalism suffice?
Absolutely you need to love what you do to be happy. If happiness isn't a requirement, then sure, professionalism would suffice.
What do you do when a client requests something that you believe is not suitable for him/her?
I take their vision and inject some of my knowledge and wisdom into the equation with the hope of coming up with something that still has roots in their original request, but that is tailored to suit them asthetically.
Besides advising clients, do you also educate them?
I love to teach as I go along. I don't see the joy of having talents if they are not to be shared.
Isn't there a cult of vanity in premeditated publicity and fashion poses?
Of course, but it's all about fantasy, isn't it. How boring life and art would be without it.
Your definition of "glamour"?
Respect for Beauty.
Please name three well-known personalities whose look you admire, and three who need to urgently change their image.
*Samantha Chapman, British Make-up Artist. Strikingly Beautiful Lady with impeccable taste! *Dita Von Teese, Lovely, Elegant, Classic. *Natalie Portman, Effortlessly beautiful! Who needs an overhaul??? *Dita Von Teese!!! As much as I Love her, I feel like she has pidgeon-holed herself too much. I believe in taking elements from lots of different styles and Aesthetics and combining them to make something that is not only uniquely you, but also something that changes and evolves over time with you. *Helena Boham Carter...Sometimes I think, yeah I know what she's trying for here! but it falls so short of the mark, it barely leaves the starting point!! *Britney Hilton Lohan:)
Being surrounded by a different style can cause a person to feel different. Can such a feeling transform a person?
Absolutely. Again it's about the fantasy of it. Role play.
What trends do you see gaining momentum?
Constant reinvention of the old, making something new.
Make a prediction: how long will the fashion of piercing and tattoos last?
I think the 2 are not mutually inclusive of eachother. I feel that piercings are already losing favour but tattoo art will endure as it encompasses so many different styles.
What magazines or websites do you follow to keep up to date? What other types of cultural inputs serve as sources of inspiration for you?
Youtube, Look Magazine, Glamour Mag and Website....... Google is my closest friend!
