Interview mit:THEDoT_Songwriter [songzbythedot]
MUSIK
Was machen Sie? Hey! I'm a songwriter and vocal producer. :)
Arbeiten Sie allein oder in einer Gruppe? Sollten Sie in einer Gruppe arbeiten: Wer sind Ihre Kollegen? For the lyrical part of songwriting, I usually write alone. But it is great collaborating with other people...for the most part, I get the music from music producers, such as Miykal Snoddy, Bolo Da Producer, NiKETORY, & Marcus Slade...to name a few of my music friends. :)
Here is the link to my music website, where you can stream some of my songs & see video work that I've done! www.Wix.com/SONGZBYTHEDOT/MusicAndMedia ...feel free to send me a note through my website! :)
I'm happy to say that my songwriting has earned me an award from ASCAP, as well as the Georgia Music Association in the past. Most recently, I was nominated for another ASCAP Award via the Sammy Cahn Foundation. The best reward is the encouragement I get from the people that are enjoying my music! So, thank you!
Diskografien, an denen Sie mitgewirkt haben: I'm still an aspiring songwriter, it's a process! But I've recently written for CaliStylZ, who is signed to N.A.R.S. Records, the label of Super Producer DANJAHANDZ. There are also six songs I've placed with new R&B artist Chris Rich, & six others with new pop artist Sophia Grace. I also wrote the verses for SupaHotBeats artist Nikkiya, on her hit song "TiTANiC", which you can download here: http://bit.ly/mOQdpB ...In the meantime, I have songs with J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, DanjaHandz, Miykal Snoddy, & Dungeon Family...to name a few companies I've collaborated with.
| Wie haben Sie mit der Musik angefangen? Wer hat Sie eingeführt? I've been writing songs for about 10 years now, but I started with poetry in grade school. After high school, I moved to Atlanta to be in a girl group, for which I wrote and arranged all the songs. The group broke up, but that's when I realized my true passion was for songwriting! I've been honing my skills for the past 4 years or so, and now I'm getting into shopping my material for placement.
The feedback has been phenomenal! Very positive, very encouraging...I'm excited for what's to come! |
Welche musikalische Ausbildung haben Sie genossen? I've never had a songwriting lesson, but I hope to work with Diane Warren & Kendrick Dean someday! Also, I've never had a vocal lesson, but I'd LOVE to get some sessions in with "Ms. Jan" in Atlanta! We'll see....:)
I knew I wanted to do this for a living back in 1999, when my girl group broke up and I'm speaking with record label execs about what to do with our catalog. That conversation helped me to see what I could really contribute to a professional music situation...and that is my strength in songwriting. :) I love it!
Wie verläuft Ihr kreativer Prozess? There are many ways to approach creating a song. I've made it my business to be strong in several of them. Sometimes I don't have a track, and I'll create an entire song, melody, harmonies and all...record it, and give it to one of my producer friends to build a beat around it. Other times, I'll select tracks/beats from a producer and then pen a song to the music I take with me. Yet another scenario is one where I come to a recording session and write the song on the spot. Sometimes alone, sometimes with a co-writer...I love to collaborate, so I make sure I keep my skills sharp for each scenario because it changes all the time, and you must be able to adapt.
Wann haben Sie Ihre hellsten Momente? Morgens oder eher am Abend? Most of the time, I write at night...probably because the house is quiet, and the world is asleep! Well, unless they are up doing music! Ha! :)
Yes, I do that all the time! My mom has even come and woken me up because I was singing a new song in my sleep! Lol! :D I get ideas all day, every day. I cannot turn it off.
It is usually just a 'feeling' of satisfaction I get. Very rarely do I go in and change anything....I personally feel it's best not to over think the song. Lyrics should be clever, catchy, and easy to repeat. Consider your audience first, then go from there.
Wie haben Sie Ihr kreatives Territorium entdeckt? Wie würden Sie es beschreiben? If you are asking where I usually like to write? :) It's at home....in my pj's, with snacks and a Pepsi!
Welcher Teil Ihrer Arbeit gefällt Ihnen am wenigsten? What I like most about songwriting is hearing from my listeners that they enjoyed what I've done. Makes me smile everytime!
Wie oft üben Sie? I write EVERYDAY. :)
In the past, a few of the artists I've opened for P.Diddy, Faith Evans, and DMX. Aside from that, I used to sing with The Cotton Club Band in Germany....anytime I'm about to perform, I'm happy and nervous at the same time. It's very exciting!
Welche Musiker oder Gruppen haben Sie in Ihrer Laufbahn inspiriert? In terms of awesome songwriting & vocal skills, my absolute favorite artist is Mariah Carey. But I also love the works of Aretha Franklin, Diane Warren, Prince, & Emily King, to name a few. :) Inspiration comes everyday, from everywhere. Music is music!
| Drei Schlüssellieder Ihres Lebens: "Looking In" by Mariah Carey
"T'Ain't Nobody Bizness" by Blinky Williams
"Never Say..." by ME! ~.THE.DoT...Songwriter :) |
Was müsste man tun, um die Piraterie einzudämmen? If you are asking what to do to avoid Pirates/stealing of your music? You really can't avoid someone taking it these days, with the internet and everything, but you CAN protect yourself if it does happen, by registering your songs with your local performance rights organization: SESAC, ASCAP, GEMA, etc.... But also you must copyright your material. That way, if anyone uses your songs without your permission, you can take them to court. It's worth the small fee you pay, to protect your future.
Well, I love 'pretty' music...lol! So I can't get into the Heavy Metal....screaming over ripping electric guitars? But I don't judge anyone who loves it! We all have our own personal tastes! :D
I had a very late music session last night....did not get home until 4AM, so I woke up around 10AM which is late for me. :)
Many of my songwriting opportunities have come through 'word-of-mouth'. So if I did a great job with one company, they refer me to another, and so on....But I also make GREAT use of the social networking world: Twitter, Facebook, Myspace are excellent tools to use to reach out to music executives & sell yourself. That way, you can send them a message and include a link to your music site right then! I have had great success this way. :)
I used to have an office job, up until 2008. But since then, I've only been doing music jobs...and that has gone well enough for me not to have to return to 'the work force'. I'm working very hard to continue in this lane.
I have toured as a singer in the past, and I've also done club gigs. The pay is very diverse, and for me personally it has ranged from $150-2500 US per night.
Wen würden Sie sofort als Vorgruppe einsetzen? Right now, I'm loving everything coming out of the N.A.R.S camp! So, a tour with CaliStylZ & Luke James would be HEAVEN....*dreaming* :D
Was würden Sie jemandem raten, der von der Musik leben will? I would advise you get feedback on your material from people you know are going to be honest with you. Also, practice, practice, practice! Do research on the ones that have garnered success in the music job you want to one day have, and try to apply some of their suggestions in your journey. Network!!!! You will never get to where you want to be by doing everything yourself. It takes a team! Always be professional. Do not gossip!!! Reach out to people you can offer your services to, in exchange for their help on your project. It really works! :) Be ON TIME for your appointments! Respect others' schedules. Most importantly, maintain a positive attitude! No one wants to work with a sour-puss. :D
