POLITICS
How do you define your political position? What is the ideology that inspires it? Social democratic. Broadly, centre-left.
What matters more in deciding your vote: the party, the candidate, or the ideas? The Party, due to a faith and trust in that party's ideas.
Do you think religion has a place in politics? Yes. All sections of society do.
Are high abstention levels a serious problem for democracies? Yes. It shows a weakness of the political movements and parties that stand for elected office and is one that they must respond to
Should parties that want to eliminate democracy be allowed to participate in democratic elections? Yes.
Are Right and Left obsolete concepts? Not quite, but they are definitely less significant than they used to be and increasingly so
Why does hunger continue to exist in the world? Is this the result of a deliberate policy? No it is due to mismanagement of the myriad self-interests in global politics, governance and markets.
What type of information should a government be able to legally maintain on about its citizens? Anything relevant to the protection of the basic human rights we expect - protection etc. Obviously though there is a balance between that and civil liberty. So each case on it's merit
What political figures in recent history do you admire most? Last 50 years - Denis Healey, Tony Blair, Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, ASSK
Two-party systems are on the rise: is this good for politics? Probably not
Should any territory have the right of self-determination if a majority of the population votes in favour of doing so? Difficult. Probably yes
Does a state have the right to attack or intervene in another country that has not attacked said state, if the country has committed grave injustices or crimes against humanity? Absolutely yes.
Are we witnessing the end of the American empire? Probably not. Cultural hegemonic nature of "American empire" is very different to a physical empire - much harder to "end".
Why did the economies of communist countries fail? Because people realised their own power. Also because of chronic mismanagement
What is nationalism? Different in different cultures and nations. To me, nationalism is more similar to xenophobia than patriotism.
Do you actively or economically collaborate with any social organization, NGO, etc.? Yes
Do you believe in any of the conspiracy theories regarding 9-11? No.
Are there peoples more civilized than others? Or is it merely a question of cultural differences? There are not peoples more civilized than other. There are rules more civilized than others though.
Are there too many taxes? There are too many taxes, but at the moment probably not too much tax
Do you believe in affirmative action? Yes
Does globalisation help in the development of the world's poorest countries, or does it perpetuate conditions of exploitation? At the moment probably more the former, but that is changing. Globalisation can help if the conditions are used for those ends.
Should a maximum limit of permissible personal fortune exist; and thereby, place limits on individual wealth? No. It should just be taxed accordingly
Do you defend the ecotaxes? In principle
Should consensual offenses such as drug use or prostitution be legalized? Haven't decided. At the moment I'd say "no"
Are you pro-choice or pro-life? Pro-choice
Are you in favor of or against the death penalty? Against
Should homosexual couples have the same right to adopt as heterosexual couples? Yes
Do you believe that the world crisis can bring positive changes to social values? Any conditions can bring positive change so long as power is wielded properly. So yes.
What significant changes do you think Obama can bring about along his presidential term? More health care, equalising marriage, fairer tax system...but as an outsider, is hard to say much more.
