Interview with:

Chetan Jariwala [teachinguru]

EDUCATION
What subjects do you teach? What types of students do you have?
Actually I am an e-learning consultant focusing on distance education & providing students an online platform to study from the comfort of their home.
Can you provide a link to a site where we can see something about what you do or the center where you work?
How have your past experiences prepared you for teaching? How did you become interested in education?
Being a traditional graduate, I wanted to pursue further/higher education. However I had a full time job that was an obstacle in my quest to attain quality education. One of my friends suggested online learning (distance degree schooling) to fulfill my long term dream. I earned a degree through online college, afterward decided to use the same method to educate students in the remote/rural parts of India. Instead of building/bringing students to a new school, why not just go straight to the houses of students! In other words, provide an opportunity to educate people within their home through a computer.
Who was your most influential teacher and why?
Mr Piyush dhabuwala, simply because he talked the talked & walked the walk
What is your educational philosophy?
To teach students to succeed not only in the world of academics/career but also in the University of LIFE!
What is the most challenging aspect of teaching for you?
To get students to respond and brainstorm subjective issues.
What kind of relationship do you have with your students?
A guru that can be a friend occasionally
What is the secret to instilling interest in knowledge?
In today's age, students are adapt to learning through visionary and practical simulation. Raising the interest level in knowledge is by giving live examples.
What is your philosophy on homework and grading?
It's part of schooling... doesn't matter if you like it or not
Is it possible to teach creativity? how?
I don't think you can teach creativity but it can be installed in students so that they are inspired to take their own creative skills to another level.
How do you individualize your teaching? How do you handle the different ability levels of students in classes?
I don't individualize... Every student whether skilled or not, my teaching style is meant for everyone who are willing to listen.
What do you expect from your supervisor? What qualities would you like to have in your principal?
Accountability & Respect
What issues in education are of greatest concern to you?
Education is not limited to just school... Education can be attained at every corner of the street as well as individuals. My concern is simple, don't overestimate yourself after attaining graduation... Your true educational journey begins after college.
Would it be a good thing if teachers had economic incentives based on student performance?
No. It can end up corrupting the entire system & relationship between a student/teacher
Besides more financial resources, what do today's schools lack?
Authority
What are some ways you have incorporated technology into the classroom.
By using collaborative software & web portals to bring a higher level of interaction between students and teachers
If you could create the ideal school, what would it be like?
Like the Tajmahal or Pyramids!
What are your professional goals? Where do you want to be in five years?
To cut illiteracy rates in under developed countries.
