Interview with:

Thais Azevedo [thaitata]

EDUCATION
What subjects do you teach? What types of students do you have?
I teach English as a foreign language. My students are business people or soccer players, people who need to speak English as fast as possible.
Can you provide a link to a site where we can see something about what you do or the center where you work?
I work at Park Idiomas. Our website is www.parkidiomas.com.br
How have your past experiences prepared you for teaching? How did you become interested in education?
I started out helping my neighbors with their English homework. I tried different things to explain some rules. My main idea was making them understand the language in a fun way! Then I took some teaching courses and here I am today!
Who was your most influential teacher and why?
I've had some amazing teachers in my life. But the most influential person was my dad, because he hates English. The reason he hates it is that he used to have a horrible English teacher! She traumatized him! I decided I wouldn't be like her! I would make my students love English! I want my students to have fun while learning!
What is your educational philosophy?
My philosophy is try being your student. It's not so easy to learn a new language, but never underestimate them! They'll progress faster than you could have ever imagined! And have fun! If I'm not having fun, my student won't have fun!
What is the most challenging aspect of teaching for you?
Teaching students with speach disabillities. It's amazing when you see them progressing!
Would it be a good thing if teachers had economic incentives based on student performance?
Yes! I do my all to make a student learn! A reward here and then wouldn't harm me at all! The thing is, being a teacher in Brazil is horrible! We have the smallest salary but the biggest responsability! Every person in the world once depended on a teacher! Teachers can make a person become a great professional or not! I have the education on my hands! I'm not only teaching, I'm giving my students an opportunity to become whoever they decide to become!
What qualities would you need to see in someone before advising him/her to go into teaching?
Patience and caring for people! A teacher without patience and love is not a teacher, is just a person with some knowledge!
