Interview with:Therese Tan [theresetan]
ILLUSTRATION
What is your specialty in illustration? My specialty would be fashion illustration, character design and cartooning.
Is there a web address where we can see some of your work? http://www.mysteriousxbeauty.com
Have you completed formal art studies, or are you self-taught? I have completed my BFA in the Fashion Institute of Technology but have self-taught myself as a child and have continued throughout my adult years.
What past or present day illustrators do you admire most? A few of my favorite illustrators are Miki Amano, Stina Persson, Yoshitaka Amano and Jason Brooks.
Do you have a particular style, or does it vary a lot? My style is usually fashionable and stylized.
What type of music do you listen to while you work? I listen to all kinds of music really. I can listen to classical to hard rock; it depends on my mood.
What part of your work do you do on paper and what part digitally? I always start out on paper. I most likely work on it digitally after I have created it by hand.
What research do you do for your illustrations? I get inspired by magazines and photos and incorporate them into my work. But I will definitely take photographs or look into whatever the topic is in order for it to look correct.
Do you have any specific goals as an illustrator? I really want to make likable characters and cute pictures for my clients. But if they have other intentions, I want to satisfy both me and the client.
What are you working on now? I am working on various projects at the time being, including CD covers for underground rock bands.
What advice do you have for someone who likes to draw and would like to make a living from it? I think someone should really want to do what they love to do, but also they should perfect their technique whether it takes months or years. They should definitely go take classes in order to make a living out of it since there is a lot of competition in the illustration world (or even the art world). If someone really wants it, they should not be discouraged by others even if someone does. They have to overcome that and be totally serious about their goals.
