Interview with:Dominique Hart [thispearlsview]
DESIGN
 | Where can we view your portfolio online? www.behance.net/dominiquehart :) |
 | Shapes, color, concept: where do you usually begin when conceiving a design? I usually begin with the Concept without a doubt. Because its from a well thought out/simple concept where any design stems from. The colors or shapes in the design simply just illustrate that concept or message intended to be communicated. If no concept or central message was ever thought of then the design would really just be colors and shapes on a page (at least from an advertising standpoint).
So yes, I usually start with the concept and message when conceiving a design. |
ADVERTISING
 | What is your specialty: creativity, contact, or research? Creative! |
 | Have you got a blog or web page? www.twitter.com/thispearlsview (personal twitter)
www.thispearlsview11.wordpress.com (blog from study abroad in Japan)
www.facebook.com/startwithkangenwater (businss facebook - LIKE!)
www.twitter.com/startwithkangen (business twitter page)
yup...that' pretty much it :) |
 | What brings you the most satisfaction: when your advert pleases your boss, your client, your friends, or your mother? When it pleases my client.
I believe that's where the true value and satisfaction is. In the end, if your client does not love your work but your boss does, is the project complete? No. Because you will have to keep creating if the client doesn't approve anyway. Therefore, my job is yet to be complete and I will not be satisfied until the final decision made is ultimately satisfactory by the client. I mean, they're the ones TRULY paying for it right?
My friends are for critique purposes only. They may like it, but the design or idea given may not truly match what the client may need. So therefore, their opinions or thoughts can only go but so far (in my eyes).
As for my mom. She's always going to love anything I do. As long as it makes sense and makes her proud she came to America in the first place (lol). |
 | Is advertising merely spam? Advertising is NOT spam.
If the advert is done in a way that is not targeted specifically and just aimlessly spread, then THAT is spam. But if the advert was carefully planned and has purpose in who it was created for, THEN it becomes advertising. |
 | Is it possible for someone in advertising to communicate well with people of other generations or cultures not their own? I think it is possible. Humans don't know everything. So therefore, as humans, we seek knowledge so that we may know and truly understand. That is how I feel with advertising across various cultures. You may not know the the essence of a culture but there is nothing in the "rule books" that says that you can't research and ask questions to truly understand the market you wish to target wit your campaign/message.
So do i find it possible? Absolutely. Just try to understand the culture more as oppose to telling people about a culture they know and live everyday. I notice that many advertising professionals lack that and are now realizing the issue of "How do I better communicate with them?"
Never assume that you know what you talking about. EVEN IF YOU DO, double check. It's possible that you could've missed something. |
PERSONALITY
 | To which other place in the world would you move without hesitation? JAPAN! JAPAN! JAPAN! (preferably Tokyo - I'm a city girl at heart)
Studying abroad (fall of 2010) there changed my life and turned it from a hungry curiosity to a definite need in my life. If I could move there and work or be sent there frequently I would. I have already built a network there so I'm all set! lol :D |
CULTURE
 | What books are you currently reading? Primarily: "Black Woman Redefined" by Sophia A. Nelson
Secondary: All of my college textbooks recommended for reading respectively by class, and textbooks.
Lastly: Self Help Books (only read those when ABSOLUTELY necessary...otherwise I learn on my own through asking questions and experience) |
MEMOIRS
 | What are the things that you definitely want to do before dying? Ya know what?! It sounds a little cheesy (for some), but I really just want to:
-Achieve and succeed in ALL my goals that I set out for myself
-make changes in the world, even in the smallest of ways (i.e through advertising or my actions in my community)
-Have or create something that when i do leave, that I am remembered for a positive change in the world (i.e. my workplace, my community, in my professional endeavors etc)
-Have ALL that I deserve plus more
-Do for my family what they couldn't do for themselves when they were my age
-and to just find balance in it all |
