ART
What do you do? How do you define yourself as an artist? I am a tattoo artist and i also paint in different mediums. And I draw.
What is your message? i don't really have a message I just do what i feel I need to do at the moment. But I always love creating new things.
Your biography in four lines. how about to words. SELF MADE.
Do you upload your work to the web? If so, where could we see it? Yes I do. I have two facebook pages Travis T_loc Wycoff and the art of Travis Wycoff .http://www.facebook.com/theartoftraviswycoff i also have a Blog Spot at http://www.traviswycoff.blogspot.com/
How is an idea born? For you, what is inspiration? An idea for me is born by what ever comes to me i guess. I am inspired by everything around me, be it life in general, a song, family, or other artist.
What role does technology play in your creative process? before nothing, but a artist friend and I were talking the other day about how technology is part of a lot of artist arsenal now, with photo shop and ipad there are so many things you can do to get a design ready for a tattoo or a painting. It makes the design process run a lot smother and quicker now and allows you to step out side the box.
What is art? Expression of feelings. To me art is also a passion.
When do you get your best ideas? All the time. it's just trying translating in to a piece of art that is the tricky part.
How do you evaluate whether an idea is good or not? I do small compositions then stand back and take a good look at it and if I'm not feeling it I toss it, if it looks right I run with it and create it.
When and how did you begin to see yourself as an artist? I don't really, I'm still learning new things every day. I don't think I will ever be fully a "true artist".
Do you consider yourself postmodern? hahaha, no i don't think so.
Must an artist reinvent him/herself everyday? to keep fresh yes, and i think artist are. there is always something new coming out.
Which artists do you admire and how do they influence your work? The list is so long. I am influenced by so many. I learn from them all the time. a lot of the artist that are right in my own town are some of the best and i look up to them and admire the work they do.
What do you think about public funding for the arts? I think its needed. Most artist don't make much if not anything at all. And when they are just starting out it's hard to find funding for your supplies and to learn. I think schools need it the most. There are so many young artist out there with such great talent.
Is art necessary? Yes. it is very necessary. Art imitates life. We have had art teach us so much about the past through many paintings and drawings as far back as the start of man kind. Art depicts the times and what we have accomplished. And it still will well in to the future.
Does it pain you to let go of a piece you have sold? At first I didn't want to sell any of my paintings, they were just for me. Plus I didn't think anyone would like them. But when people asked to buy them and I saw how much they liked what I was doing, i thought deferentially. Some are easier to part with then other I guess.
In art, there is no guide. How do you know what the next step is? me personally I don't know. I just go for it. To me that's what art is no guide and just express your self. But in Tattooing it is a lot different, there are some guides you must go by.
How do you feel about the fact that the pieces exhibited in contemporary art museums are often of artists already deceased? They are the history of what we do as far as art goes, we learn from them. It is great to be able to see there work.
Do you personally collect any items? Art, anything old looking, and I'm a Star Wars fan so a lot of that stuff too.
What advice would you give to those just beginning? Have patient's, And soak up as much knowledge as you can from other artist. Do some kind of art everyday and don't give up. And defiantly stay humble.
